  The world’s most powerful filmmaker turns inwards, finally embraces his Jewish-ness, and delivers a solemn plea: human life has incalculable value. Where previously Spielberg has used his large-scale filmmaking gifts for spectacle, here he uses his crowds and overwhelming imagery to subdue us throughout the 3 hour and 15 minute runtime.

  “Novocaine” is what happens when a script with a promising concept is assaulted by lazy studio notes and mediocre filmmaking. It takes too long to start, it’s shot with too many setups, and features an awful midpoint twist that cripples its romantic subplot. I’ve officially lost my taste for “comedy” from over-the-top violence.
