When was the last time you felt a film squarely one step ahead of you? I usually have to dig back in time (usually to the 1970s) for that special and increasingly rare feeling.

“Black Bag” is an absolute triumph of form and feeling we simply don’t get at in the modern theatrical landscape. Soderbergh constantly impressed me by his countless risks in camera placement, shot sequencing, and continuity. Koepp’s career-best script is playful and twisty, but entirely grounded. The performances…. they’re all just… so… hot.

“Novocaine” is what happens when a script with a promising concept is assaulted by lazy studio notes and mediocre filmmaking. It takes too long to start, it’s shot with too many setups, and features an awful midpoint twist that cripples its romantic subplot. I’ve officially lost my taste for “comedy” from over-the-top violence.

I’m struggling with Bong Joon Ho’s English language filmography. For all the bizarre tonal choices, the stakes were so bland.
