Set during World War II, this underrated Stanley Kramer gem stars Anthony Quinn, who is clearly having a great time as Italo Bombolini, the gregarious and clownish Mayor of Santa Vittoria, who tries to stop the German army, led by Hardy Krüger, from taking his town’s only substantial source of income: their wine.
Quinn’s boisterous comic performance is a joy to watch, as is the wonderful work of the fantastic Anna Magnani.
I also loved Ernest Gold’s colorful musical score.
Definitely worth checking out.
Two incredible actors team up for this tender film about two World War II buddies who are reunited in modern day Naples only to find that Antonio (Mastroianni)has been forging letters to his sister from Robert (Lemmon) since the war ended. It was his way of helping her forget the American who left her behind. Worth viewing for the fantastic chemistry between both stars.
