The one-shot technique is constantly impressive but, tbh, it frequently took me out of what is an otherwise devastating piece of televisual art.
Stephen Graham has never been better, and that’s saying something, but Owen Cooper, in his acting debut, is an absolute revelation.
A timely and terrifying wake-up call to society as a whole.

Oscar-winning docudrama following the harrowing story of one family whose father is disappeared by the authorities in 1960s/70s Brasil. Fernanda Torres is worthy of her Oscar acting nod.

The Railway Men - The Untold Story of Bhopal 1984

    ★★½

This is a tough one. Look, their heart is in the right place, that’s obvious. I’ve been to Bhopal and what Union Carbide did to that city is criminal. That said, this suffers terribly from comparisons to the infinitely superior Chernobyl. Inferior budget, inferior acting, inferior script, inferior direction. And, to cap it all, it reeks of hysterical heroics and melodramatic cheesiness. Because of this, supposedly tragic scenes of devastation are rendered impactless.

This is a weird one. While there’s obviously lots to admire here, from the beautifully naturalistic performances to the assured composition and often lyrical cinematography, this just didn’t connect with me at all. I love all things A24, am a big fan of slow cinema (love Kelly Reichardt’s movies) and think Julianne Nicholson and Elias Koteas can do no wrong, but I was left unmoved. Obviously my loss, because so many people seem to have got so much out of this.
