The shot of all the sheets in storage. this shot conveys the reality of post-war Italy like almost no other shot in the movie does. It conveys how desperate people were for money that they sold their sheets for some. At first, there only seems to be a few levels of sheets, then the camera tilts up and pans over a bit and the viewer sees that there are a lot more sheets.
