Eight Hours Don’t Make a Day

I picked the perfect time to watch this as I’m currently in school to become a machinist. This was cozy to watch as many of its plot points mirrored those in my life. The right wing circles I’ve been rolling in knock socialist films every chance they get, so I’m being naughty by marinating in this one. I like seeing Gottfried John play a good guy. I can only hope that my future machining coworkers are as level-headed and collaborative as Jochen’s. I want to emulate this series’ casual drinking, smoking, and romance.

The original FDNY firefighter documentary would have been fascinating enough on its own. The footage in this is stunning. I like that it stays firmly from the firefighter's perspective without global or political influence. It stays true to the filmmakers' original intent despite the world-changing impact of the event. I still can't get over the scale of the attacks. I stayed at a hotel next to the rebuilt World Trade Center last summer and I will visit again someday.

The Kubrick references in this are clever. The whimsical score prevents you from feeling scared while watching even though the film has an undercurrent of supernatural horror. The kid is creepy and we could have gone further with Nicole Kidman's descent into delusion and madness. Another user commented that the film should have ended with the kid up in the tree and I agree. It's captivating for much of its runtime, but it doesn't quite stick the landing for greatness.

An appropriately over the top movie for an extraordinary life. I’ve grown fonder of Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby adaptation over the years, so I didn’t want to miss his return to theaters. You should leave feeling overwhelmed and full. Great performances top to bottom, especially Austin Butler in the lead role. The soundtrack kicks in at just the right times. They somehow found the time to give Elvis’s influences their due attention. I didn’t expect an Elvis biopic that delivers in 2022, but that’s exactly what I got.
