liking things is more fun than not liking things 🍿
favorites are my most recently watched all-timers 🎥
in a time when modern animation has been at least somewhat visually revitalized, it’s telling that the most effective animated film of the year foregoes dialogue completely.
the issue with the Spiderverse-ification of animation is that it leans hard on high-octane, nonstop ADHD wacky silly antics and screaming cartoon characters. Flow couldn’t be further in the opposite direction, and yet the children in my showing were fully engaged from start to finish.
comparisons to Fumito Ueda’s work are spot on, but Flow…
Anora is the rarest kind of movie; one that swings for a full range of emotions and hits them all out of the park. it’s lively, tense, thought-provoking, fun, complex, shocking, and hilarious. oftentimes all at once. it reminds me a lot of Boogie Nights in that way.Â
the performances are all stellar, Mikey Madison being the standout. the script doesn’t over explain Anora’s internal thoughts and feelings because it doesn’t need to. Ani feels like a fully fleshed out person…

in my opinion every change made to fit the screen was a positive one, with the focus on and changes to Chani being my favorite. her relationship with Paul is explored in greater detail and with more nuance than as i remember it in the book.Â
while not exceptionally emotionally…
let’s make one thing clear; this is not a movie. Furiosa is a 5 episode miniseries, straight up.Â
i’m not sure if George Miller is still in a short story anthology mood after Three Thousand Years of Longing or if this was originally planned as a mini-series, but that’s what this is.
it’s a good miniseries - one with the artistry and production value of a George Miller film - but if you go into it expecting a movie you may be…
