I just watched “Hide and Shriek”, which is similar. This is the better crafted movie, but I would rather watch “Hide and Shriek”. It spite of the poor lighting and goofy ending, it is more fun. Also, more memorable elements and has some nice nudity.
This was just a showcase for gore and I didn’t like the supermarket setting. The kills are done mechanically and I hated the end.
I wasn’t into this when I first saw this years ago, but I have changed my mind. Very vibey film. A meditation on drugs and violence. But still also entertaining. I love the night cinematography. The car chase near the end is awesome.
There were some flaws. The cop characters were a bit cliched and underwritten. David Caruso does what he always does. Certain actors like Steve Buscemi and Giancarlo Esposito were barely used. The romance between the pretty lawyer and Walken was a bit unbelievable.
I’m shocked this was not a hit in 1990.
Perhaps the most overrated horror film ever.
Let me count the problems in this turd of a movie. First there's the acting which is dialed up to 11. Then we're supposed to believe that Annie had no idea that her mother was in a satanic cult. Her mom was just a little wacky and secretive? Annie never bothered going through her mom's possessions after her death? That's the first thing I'd do if my mom was a fucking weirdo and…
I hated this. It's basically a terrible shaggy dog story with some elements of Don't Breathe.
I hated how the characters are incredibly dumb. Hated Justin Long and how the movie had to reinforce what a prick he is - right down to him using an anti-gay slur. And don't get me started on the haphazardly shoehorned social commentary.
This makes me want to stop watching new horror.
