I was recommended this by my stepdad growing up, around the ripe age of about 9, right when I was beginning to break into the wonderful world of horror. A perfect entry level choice, a family friendly 'spielbegian' creature feature if you will.

I remember it being pretty tame even back then, hoping for more grotesque practical effects. I specifically remember being disappointed by the eventual size of the spiders. holding my breath for a monster size animatronic which never…

As I trek deeper into the dark and treacherous world of extreme cinema. My appreciation for transgression and boundary-pushing art continues to grow, my taste for depravity intensifies and the inspiration to adopt the very formula in my own film-making pursuits has officially closed in. I have realised however, the only exception to the rule is within the subset or torture porn. I will forever be a gore-hound and will always relish in practical SFX/makeup but I can't seem to…

    Surfer, Dude

    ★★★★

There's no denying this super chill, care-free wallowing dramedy was declared completely braindead upon its initial release. Surfer, dude reaches a whole new context given the situation of the current pandemic. There's a lot of meandering, internal monologues and philosophical contemplation. But at its core its a story of man robbed of his purpose, how does one continue to make sense of their life without any purpose? Boring to some, meditative to others. I for one think this film is criminally underrated.
