The main thing that makes Blue Velvet Hitchcockian is the perverse inner core of things that, on the outside, seem normal and pleasant. In Vertigo, Scottie’s love for Madeleine at first appears authentic and beautiful. But after she dies and Scottie finds Judy, we see he’s actually a pretty sick and twisted dude as he tries to mold Judy into Madeleine. We also realize, after closely (or somewhat closely) examining the first half of the movie, that Scottie didn’t know…

This movie opens up with a landscape. Hitchcock sure does love landscapes. This one isn't as pretty as the San Francisco one in Vertigo, though. Trash and stuff. And look at all these dissolves! In Vertigo, basically every scene transitioned with a dissolve. Now this opening montage has a dissolve between every cut! Gnarly. This makes sense, given the hype it received and its ever-so quirky sense of humor, which always receives mixed reception (anyone anti-anything-that-may-remind-them-of-John-Green may want to avoid this movie). To me, Moonrise Kingdom was neither a masterpiece nor a trashterpiece. It was just a quality movie.

The classic story line of two kids falling in love and running away together is done…
