    One of the lesser suspense thrillers Jimmy Sangster wrote for Hammer. It's well shot and nicely acted, with a couple of solidly creepy moments, but the central gaslighting mystery just isn't all that compelling.

    Hammer fans are likely to be disappointed by the complete lack of familiar faces. (I mean, not even Michael Ripper in a small barkeep or train conductor role — nothin'.)

    Yes, the monster makeup is a big letdown. It's probably why this cozy little gothic horror fairytale is under-appreciated, even by many Hammer fans. But it's got a splendid cast, wonderful atmosphere and evocative production design... To (again) borrow Katie of the Night's apt description of the 1960s Hammer vibe, it's "cozy" — and as an old school Monster Kid, that's always a big plus for me.
