I'm more interested in this novel from the slush pile by an unknown author that gets a massive advance. Even in the halycon days of 2002, I don't think that happened!
There’s a lot of confident and stupid people out there…who knew!
Much as Wild at Heart is to Fire Walk With Me, this film is a highly stylised exploration of ideas that would find more cogent form in his next film, Mulholland Dr.
Wild at Heart considers familial and sexual trauma patchily, but FWWM fully confronts it. Likewise, Lost Highway plays with the idea of showing a person's invented fantasy life to distract from and justify their existing one. It's a hard concept to pull off, and he doesn't always do it. But Lynch perfects it with Mulholland.
Always fascinating to watch a master at work though. Such style!
