At first it doesn't seem like it all fits together, but after finishing the film and thinking for a bit, I think i understand. In our first scene we have a family whose car's broken down. The mechanic tells them it could be one of two problems, that is until he goes to fix it and a third option arrives. Which i think is the point of the movie. Uncertainty.

All of it. The fact that Orlando Bloom might seem a bit less characterized than actors in most movies, I believe is completely intentional. This is not meant to be like most movies. This is meant to feel more real than that, and I feel that under characterization helps the viewer to put themselves in the seat of the main character.
