Love a film about the importance of socialism, but this was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring
Romulus feels like it follows the classic reboot recipe for a franchise that has spun off into too many directions: to quote the Green Goblin: "BAACK TO FORMULA." As a result, Romulus loses some of its identity as it adheres, sometimes rigidly, to the established conventions of the golden age of the franchise. However, there are still moments of genuine tension, suspense, and scariness that make worth a watch.
I’m still processing my own personal feelings on the film but from as objective a viewpoint as I can muster, this may just be Nolan’s magnum opus. A haunting, claustrophobic thriller trojan-horsed as a biopic with sequences that combine cinematography, editing, music, acting et al. into a perfect concoction of what this art form can do.
Definitely not as horrendous as some of the MCU fan discourse will lead you to believe. But after the subsequent blockbuster peaks that MCU phase 3 delivered, it is disappointing that this is the fourth Marvel film I've felt was rather middling.
Rudd, Majors and Pfeiffer were all great, the other ensemble of actors unfortunately don't get a whole lot to sink their teeth into. Once again, it feels like Marvel in their endeavour to cram films with potentially exciting concepts and highly anticipated characters, they've forgotten to place priority on making a quality standalone film.
