This is the one that famously has “too many endings”. What bullshit! I remember sitting in a cinema two decades ago with tears streaming down my face from the moment Frodo says, “I’m glad to be with you, Samwise Gangee, here at the end of all things” all the way through to Sam’s return home to his little house. It’s the best half hour of the entire trilogy and the perfect ending - refocusing on love and friendship over battles and glory and death.

A Different Man 2024
Really liked this after not particularly expecting to - really didn’t know what to expect. Thought it was fun and weird and clever but can’t say I found it funny. Maybe I’m not getting something everyone else gets. Sebastian Stan is great in non-superhero mode. It took me half and hour to work out where I’d seen her before, but seeing Renate Reinsve again made me want to see Worst Person again. And I wish I’d known who Adam Pearson…

Surprised at how little I enjoyed this. Matt and Mara didn’t seem to have a comfortable friend chemistry and Matt’s oafish “charisma” just put me off. I did like Mara’s conversations with her friend Emma, especially when she skewers Matt’s writing.
