extraordinarily sentimental with its swelling score telling you exactly how to feel in oscar-baity moments…. and damn does it work. denzel’s face holds the dignity of his ancestors and his eyes the utter human betrayal of slavery in that whipping scene.
it could be perhaps easy to write this off as cornball, but I really think this film imperfectly, but with full heart holds the complex lives and motivations of the black and white unionists that fought for the soul…
