A strange one. I’m not sure why the Captain of the enterprise, its doctor and a first officer known more for combat ability are the most necessary people to form a stealth team. I’m not sure why Edward Jellycunt needed to take command and rile everyone up for no reason. That just kept playing in my mind the entire time and I completely understand that you’re supposed to be questioning why any of this is happening, but it gets a…

I’m trying to watch more Trek outside the movies and I’ve heard people call this 2 parter a better movie than First Contact which is my favourite Trek film. There’s so much more character drama in this and it really feels like an encounter with something so alien it’s difficult to conceive. There's something really satisfying about this sort of late eighties, high contrast, noisy anime. An early hit from Mamoru Oshii, this film deals with some pretty high concept stuff (destruction of history, mass urbanisation, the fear of technological advancements) that its goofy presentation can sometimes mask. It's actually quite nice watching an Oshii film with more expressive/cartoony characters that the director rarely deals in. If you compare this to Ghost in the Shell, with it's expressionless and difficult to relate…

Word of warning from the get go: there’s a lot of full frontal sex with minors in this. Let’s not discuss “culture differences” because it’s not 1998 anymore. I’m not saying that art shouldn’t be allowed to explore this stuff, but anime often lacks the nuance to do it without being titillating and this is no different. All this is trying to be is shocking and it completely lacks the depth to be able to present its taboo subject matter as anything other than one dimensional edgelord shite for people into sex and ultra violence. Honestly surprised this is so highly regarded.
