I used to think this movie was a little overstuffed, but I’ve walked that back after this viewing, the story has very clear cause-and-effect logic and flows really nicely! And after a point you realize that sometimes Miyazaki stories just fuckin go, man, and don’t wait around for you and me to catch up. A lot of good and enjoyable parts to this movie! Pattinson is a delight! But there’s a lot of this film that just feels overstuffed— ungapatchka, if you will. I think the fault lies in the editing, both the movie as a whole but also in how a lot of the comedy just…doesn’t time out right. Beyond this film’s special effects wizardry, the sense of unease and paranoia builds perfectly in all the scenes between the gore and viscera. One of my faves, a movie I’ve come back to so many times!

    “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding.”

What can I really say about a movie I’ve seen over 50 times since my childhood?  Picking a favorite LotR film is like picking your favorite child, but when it gets down to it, I believe Fellowship really is my number one.  There’s a tremendous sense of loss in this movie— friends die, the fellowship is broken, and the beauty and comfort of the Shire continues to recede into the distance the further the journey goes along.  But there’s something…
