You know, when Warner Bros. first announced this movie a few years back, I was so inexplicably excited to see this “sci-fi black comedy thriller” by my favorite director Bong. However, after finally, multiple months following its originally intended release, I got to see it at AMC Century City in Los Angeles during opening weekend. It was, frankly, a letdown.

This film to me is one of many I’ve watched that prompts the question about distinguishing art from entertainment. I did not find this film very entertaining, but I understand why some with different tastes did and appreciated the authenticity of the immigrant experience, detailed beautifully and gracefully in The Brutalist.
WarnerBros undermarketed the movie for a reason. That’s not to say it’s not good, but you should know it’s a film that plays it safe and feels like it could’ve come out in 2010. There’s minimal inclusion of today’s cinematic practices both in narrative and cinematography. The characters are a bit bland and the story is very straightforward and fast-paced.
