very tired of horror that seems to think it sits above its own critiques, while still eye-winking and engaging in the behavior it purports to chastise. yes, we are told that there are "worse things" down there---but to then make your central 'monster' a horrific, disfigured woman brought me straight back to "don't breathe" and the turkey baster scene. stupid. fake-ass moralizing horror that has no morals. i'd rather watch shit that actually commits to the bit. very corny and not "grotesque" or "horrifying" or whatever other praise people were throwing at this in 2022.

came around on this a little bit. for such a (seemingly) meticulously constructed avant-garde genre film, this is most effective when the terror it evokes is subliminal. like a lot of people, obviously, this re-connected me to a lot of my childhood memories (fears) in a multi-dimensional way. i genuinely can't recall any other horror film (ever) that really tries to channel what this does. structurally arresting. totally get that michael snow comparison. should not be compared to the outwaters, but this is clearly operating on a different stratosphere

cute! very giger--obviously. mire lee also comes to mind as a more contemporary touchstone. alchemy, tubes, machinery, metal structures--"two biomechanical lovers." also, good coil album.

you could watch this six times instead of watching the new mission impossible. not that they have anything in common
