Really, REALLY liked this. A perfect movie for adolescents, where it’s got enough actually scary, confrontational elements to stick with a teen without ever feeling like it’s being cruel, or going over their heads. Rocks. So cool that it’s Englund at the helm here—this story is well-suited to the knowledge he would’ve gained doing Nightmare on Elm Street (among others), and he does good work framing the arcs of our lead and eventual villain. Made me feel ill. I think it has one of Nolan’s most strongly expressed theses in his filmography: this was the single worst thing that has happened in all of human history. You may dispute this movie’s efficacy (and I don’t), but that’s undeniably what this movie is about—the atrocity created by our nation’s unique blend of conservative psychopathy and sociopathic liberalism. Egos for two; destruction for all.

I hope everyone in the theater, myself included, gets fucking insane nightmares from this one. What an extraordinary object. When the finale card rolled and the lights went up, the room felt shell-shocked. Dead silence, like we’d just seen a car accident. Smart choice to pop the credits at the start and make the end so abrupt—doesn’t leave any room to sit and process. Concentrated shock and awe.

I’m not sure I’ve ever felt such sustained dread in a theater…
