In reading the book, it became obvious this story was always intended to become a movie. The book is overlong and packed with so many tangents that you can barely keep the thrust of the story straight. But the underlying true story is gripping - wonderful fodder for the kind of WW2 dad movie that Britain churns out 3 of a year.
