I have seen the light. Green lights, blue lights. The signs. The sparks. The reflections on the cars. My god how is it possible a film look and sound this good? I went back and rewatched like 5 scenes immediately after finishing just because they looked so fucking cool. And one of the greatest final acts I’ve seen. Michael Mann at his best.

Words cannot describe how much this film means to me. Although I watched majority of the last hour through tears, seeing this in a full theater on 35 mm is an experience I will cherish for as long as I live.

Just about everyone in the cast gives a career defining monologue, “the goddamn regret” one delivered by Jason Robards is life changing stuff. Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore are the standouts for me, but PTA brings unbelievable performances out…

Happy to see some west Michigan representation, but this was bad.

Mimi Cave shows some stylistic flourishes, as she did with Fresh, but other than that this was an absolute drag and a mess. The reveal was horribly executed, so the slow burn had no payoff. And what was the point of Rachel Sennott’s character (I like her, but ridiculously awful accent I might add) or the racist? Shambolic screenplay.

Even better after having seen Lost Highway and Inland Empire - each of Lynch’s films, especially those that make up the LA trilogy, build off one another and provide added context.

Lynch had a singular ability to create moments that entirely transport you. The air leaves the room and you forget you are sitting somewhere watching a movie. The opening dance sequence, the audition (Watts’ performance is so damn good throughout), Club Silencio. And the way the camera moves, the dreamy transitions and superimpositions, Badalamenti’s atmospheric score, that shot of Naomi at the pool party - it all hypnotizes you completely.

Not to be dramatic, but I have an existential crisis about how much music means every time I watch this

Ed O’Brien’s laugh as he watches Johnny go crazy on Bangers + Mash brings me great joy

I’m such a sucker for sprawling dramas with kaleidoscopic interconnected stories and Altman operates with an ensemble better than anyone. It leaves many ends untied, without attempting to find resolution in any of what we see or pass judgement on its flawed characters, yet it makes perfect sense. This lack of neat conclusions reflects the imperfect relationships that drive the narrative, filled with snapshots of life’s messy moments captured by Altman’s unique brand of naturalism. And the dry tone, which…
