Otello - The Met 1978
great opera by anyone’s metric, but very weirdly sung, especially by scotto. macneil makes the best impression as iago, but one gets the sense verdi was writing this for true spinto voices and not these guys. the cassio’s okay. levine (may he burn in hell) is pretty lugubrious. scotto is super self-indulgent and scoops in ways i don’t like.
shakespeare probably knows how to make otello in any way sympathetic, but verdi sure doesn’t!

Raging Bull 1980
For all its artfulness and elegance of construction it doesn't really amount to anything more than an unpleasant, vaguely interesting film. De Niro, Pesci, and Moriarity are superb, though, and the pieces from Cavalleria rusticana are always a treat to hear.
I do think it's really funny that Jake LaMotta himself was a consultant on this. Martin really said "hey can we depict you beating your wife and mooching on underage girls" and Jake said "yeah sure."
