garfield's breakout film role, he's the reason to watch this pre-we live in time collaboration with director crowley as he brings to life a character otherwise let down by a script that plays too coy with both the details of the crime and the response to it. the public revelation of jack's identity, in every plot synopsis including the one on this site, doesn't happen until the last twenty minutes; there's not enough time given to the most interesting themes.

may have defined the visual aesthetic of the rest of the decade but it's lacking in any psychological complexity or fresh perspective that would make the misery feel worthwhile. also a total editing disaster as what would be a couple of decent loosely connected subplots of a standard drama are blown up to their own anthology episodes, the plotting and stylistic imagination far too thin to support them.

This was terrible, but not because it disgusted or offended or even confused me. It was just boring and familiar, the usual sexist, white guy shock jock bullshit except it made it worse by wasting Parker Posey. Also needed to be at least an hour shorter. Maybe two. Lots of people calling this Aster's best! It's his worst and studios need to stop giving him money.

    Edit: I Was Angry

Edit 2: I can't stop thinking about this film but…

Drove to the city just to catch this one. It was worth it and more. Deserves to be in every theater. I knew a little about the book-- mainly that Whitehead had based it on similar real-life schools-- but I wasn't expecting this story to be so layered, rich, emotional. For a film in which at least one character in every scene is always obscured from view, it's the most human thing I've seen in a long time. This is a damn movie, folks. Don't miss it.
