  I can understand why the movie was such a big hit in 1978, just a few years after the US ended its engagement in Vietnam. Although, in my opinion, the film hasn't aged well. It presents a one sided view of the war, with shallow characters and meaningless conversations.
  The Deer Hunter has some moments of brilliance but most of its 3 hours feature length, it's awfully boring to watch.
