    Chekov would have loved this.

Past Lives is a near perfect film to me. What could be a conventional love story is instead a beautiful look at the complex and messy realities of relationships across time and distance. People move, people change, and through it all, some things get left behind, but new things grow.

Overall this wasn't it for me. There was a lot about the premise that had me excited, and the tension levels at the beginning were great, but I felt like it kinda meandered in the middle and while I did like the third act it wasn't strong enough to bring the whole thing together for me.

Josh Hartnett was fantastic, carrying the film on his back, and despite my initial doubts Saleka Shyamalan holds her own.

I really liked the first 45-60 minutes of this movie. The exploration of self identity, the nostalgia of childhood and the shared experience of TV/media, the awkwardness of friendship. I thought it lost the thread a bit after that - it felt like it wanted to go into the Pink Opaque being a real thing but then backtracked and became real metaphorical.

Lundy-Paine puts out a great performance, and one of the better ones I've seen from Justice Smith as well.
