Fulfilling our collective dreams of running off into the wilderness to finally find ourselves.

While the concept taps into a raw nostalgia for an experience I never actually had, I really do wish our protagonist wasn't portrayed so heroically. He seemed like a hurt and misguided kid who took his literary inspiration too far, which ends up killing him...

This isn't the story of a hero. It's the story of an individual who is searching for deep, freedom-giving meaning just like the rest of us. That means he doesn't have it figured out.

Good film, not without its problems.

Did I like this movie? Did I not? Who knows. Did it have intrinsic, important, emotional value? I really don't think so. It was absolutely shot well, acted well, paced well. But it wasn't written incredibly well. After I walked out, I thought "wow, emotional! Must mean I would have liked it!" But then I went home and I was like hmmmm. Unpleasant feeling. We're not there to empathize with our main character, they've placed him there for us to gawk in horror. Just struggling to find what the purpose of this film was.

The horror. The horror. The feeling of watching this movie is almost incomprehensible and absolutely preceded it's reputation. Every great thing you hear about this film is true. Every detail. It's legendary and darkly beautiful
