Delightfully stupid. Generationally stupid. Whether it’s the nihilistically glib tone, the nonsensical character work and plotting, or the absolutely cartoonish violence, this is a dumb movie, yet I had a fun time with it. The gore is silly as hell, making this is a fun splatterfest - there’s a sense of exaggeration and humor to everything here that is funny more for its silliness than its wit. I don’t think the film works as a horror movie or as something with any sort of tension - but as a dumb dark comedy, it’s pretty fun.

Another delightful Bong hit - definitely the least funny of all of his movies, but that’s not surprising given the gritty moral dilemmas and the corruption on display here. Mother explores how far unconditional love for a child can drive a person and the seedy underbelly of the South Korean government and culture. It twists the notions of family and love on their head, creating a pretty fucked up tale of undying perseverance to protect those who you love. Simultaneously haunting and beautiful, this one is a banger

Brilliant isolated moments and ideas surrounded by a movie that doesn't know what to do with them. There's a raw sense of spectacle and emotion to several scenes in this, specifically the music scenes and a jaw-droppingly beautiful climax, but the movie doesn't sell these scenes within the context of its own narrative. All of the emotions here lack nuance, the character beats are rushed, and there's like 20 side stories that have no business being in this movie. The…

This is what fantasy epics should look like. Complicated politics and themes, strong characterizations, and an undeniable sense of scope and wonder. There's beauty all over this film, but also violence and hatred. How do humans coexist with a world we destroy? Is greed good when it allows us to better the lives of those we care about? What do we owe to the nature around us? The film addresses all of these questions, and it shows how there are…
