One of the times where knowing the title of the film makes the film better. As the world focuses on Rubens and Eunice struggles to keep herself and her family afloat, those words repeatedly echoed in my mind "I'm still here. I'm still here". The contrast between the family's first outing to get ice cream and the one where only Eunice takes the children is night and day. Fernanda Torres' stoic gaze and the ever-so-slight misting of her eyes in…

    Babette's Feast

Despite the ~100 minute runtime, Babette's Feast is still a film that takes its time and slowly reveals its charm (for better or for worse). Unfortunately I felt like the initial setup arc took a bit too much of the run time when so much of the film was also dedicated to the feast. That was gross! I don't think I've ever made a simultaneously surprised and disgusted face more times in my entire life than when watching The Fly.

The three main characters are all pretty good. I felt invested in Seth's and Veronica's characters and their relationship. Even as Brundle was turning into a grotesque monstrosity, there was still part of me rooting for everything to be okay. He also still has some of that Jeff Goldblum charm. Great performance by him…

Telling your long-lost love to watch Eternal Sunshine???????

Definitely a "hurts so good" film. "You dream in a language I can't understand. It's like there's place inside of you I can't go." is an instant-classic line. There are so many long spans of silence as two people struggle to find words, because what do you even say? The naturalistic dialogue coupled with some great blocking and cinematography hits harder than most dialogue ever could. There's someone so close to you, but just out of reach. Do you break through the empty space? Is that what you want? Is that what they want?
