The thermal-baths of the archaeological site of Arucci (San Mamés, Aroche, Huelva) represent an interesting architectural complex in the context of the Baetica Province. Located in one of the highest levels of
the city, this thermal space has been delimited and partially excavated during various excavation campaigns and geophysical surveys framed in different research projects. All this data set has allowed to individualize numerous rooms, swimming pool, rooms, cistern, and so, and allow, today, to establish a possible bath circuit. From the chronological point of view, the whole seems to be built in the second half of 1st. century ad, very possibly framed in the second monumentalizing impulse that undergoes the city in Flavian epoch, and maintains its use until indeterminate moments of the 3rd. century ad, although it is true that could occur from the second third of the century, a period in which the first episodes of amortization and reuse of materials in monumental
public ensembles of the city are documented.

La revisión de la documentación de las excavaciones realizadas entre 1979 y 1986 por R. Gimeno en Santa María de Hito (Valderredible), la única villa bajoimperial identificada por el momento en Cantabria, permiten proponer una reinterpretación de las estructuras constructivas mejor conservadas. Se han reconocido características formales suficientes para identificar el conjunto compuesto por tres estancias con suelos calefactados, una piscina y otras habitaciones contiguas como un balneum doméstico y no como estancias residenciales. En esa zona meridional del edificio se identifican todas las dependencias propias de una instalación termal (caldarium, tepidarium, frigidarium…) ordenadas conforme a un recorrido habitual en los balnea domésticos, un plan lineal paralelo de recorrido retrógrado. En la edificación se han empleado materiales y técnicas constructivas frecuentes en este tipo de instalaciones y, además, las estancias ocupan un lugar característico para los balnea en la planta de la villa, al final de un corredor que conecta con el resto del edificio. Nos encontraríamos, conforme a esta nueva interpretación, ante el primer balneum doméstico descrito en Cantabria, donde se conocían instalaciones públicas o semipúblicas, pero no conjuntos de esta entidad en residencias privadas. La reinterpretación de las estructuras permite suponer que era una villa de mayor tamaño y con mayores dotaciones de lo que se había estimado hasta la fecha, lo que pone manifiesto el éxito del modelo de explotación agrícola característico del periodo incluso en territorios peor adaptados a las demandas de la economía imperial. Además, resuelve mejor que la propuesta previa la lectura del plan arquitectónico de las estructuras conocidas. Otra consecuencia de esta nueva  interpretación funcional de las estructuras es que muy probablemente no conozcamos más que una parte de la villa y que quede por descubrir una parte importante del edificio, extremo que se tratará de constatar en futuras actuaciones arqueológicas que ya están en marcha.

RESUMEN: El hallazgo de una carta en el Archivo Histórico Nacional de
Toledo –Sección Nobleza- redactada en 1847 por Julián de Villaescusa, Medico
Director del Establecimiento de Aguas y Baños Minerales de Alange en aquel
momento, a la Marquesa de Monsalud, en la que se incluye una minuta donde se indica
el tratamiento a recibir en dicho balneario sirve de pretexto para profundizar en el
conocimiento de las prácticas hidroterápicas empleadas en la época, así como en los
diferentes trabajos de carácter científicos realizados sobre las aguas de este manantial.
Además, el carácter epistolar del documento nos permite también conocer otros
aspectos de la familia del II Marques de Monsalud y los contactos que la misma tenía
con la capital del Reino.

SUMMARY: The finding of a letter in the National Historical Archives –at the
Nobility Section-, written in 1847 by Julian de Villaescusa, at the time medical
administrator of the Waters and Mineral Baths of Alange, to the Marchioness of
Mosalud, wherein a record is included of the treatment to be received in the
aforementioned resort, serves as an excuse to delve deeper into the knowledge of the
hydrotherapy practices used at the time, along with the various scientific works carried
out in the spa waters. Also, the epistolary nature of the document allows us to get to
know other aspects of the Marquis of Monsalud´s family an its contacts with the
country´s capital

Τα λουτρά/οι θέρμες αποτελούν έναν από τους πιο χαρακτηριστικούς κτηριακούς τύπους του ρωμαϊκού πολιτισμού. Το ενδιαφέρον της έρευνάς μας επικεντρώνεται στα λουτρικά συγκροτήματα δημόσιας χρήσης. Ωστόσο, μελετούνται και τμήματα κτηρίων που η χρήση τους είναι αμφιλεγόμενη, εξαιτίας της αποσπασματικής αποκάλυψής τους, καθώς και εξακριβωμένα ιδιωτικής χρήσης οικιακά λουτρά, διότι και αυτά αποτελούν αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι του λουτρικού θεσμού. Στόχος της μελέτης είναι o εντοπισμός των λουτρικών εγκαταστάσεων στη Μακεδονία και η περιγραφή των αρχιτεκτονικών και των κατασκευαστικών τους χαρακτηριστικών. Η εκτενής επιστημονική βιβλιογραφία περί λουτρών, οι λουτρικές εγκαταστάσεις από όλη τη ρωμαϊκή αυτοκρατορία, καθώς και οι αρχαίες φιλολογικές πηγές παρέχουν συγκριτικό υλικό. Τα χρονικά όρια της έρευνας καλύπτουν μια ευρεία περίοδο ίδρυσης λουτρικών εγκαταστάσεων από τα τέλη του 1ου αι. π.Χ. έως τον 6ο αι. μ.Χ. Πρόθεσή μας είναι να ιχνηλατήσουμε τις μεταβολές στην αρχιτεκτονική των λουτρών και στις λουτρικές συνήθειες και κατ' επέκταση να θίξουμε τις αλλαγές του αστικού χώρου και των κοινωνικών ηθών από τη ρωμαϊκή εποχή μέχρι και την περίοδο της ύστερης αρχαιότητας.

Este trabajo se presenta como una pequeña parte del estudio que estamos realizando sobre el gran complejo termal de época romano imperial, descubierto bajo el casco urbano de Calatayud entre los años 2006-2011, concretamente en los solares de la plaza de Ballesteros nº 4 y de la avenida San Juan el Real nº 20-calle Teatro nº 4. Allí se ha documentado un gran conjunto de baños frigidarium, tepidarium, caldarium, sudatio o natatio y otras estancias auxiliares (praefurnium, etc.), además de un importante sistema de canales y cloacas para la evacuación de agua, proveniente de un importante acuífero. Hasta el momento se han excavado unos 1.300 m 2 de estas termas públicas, de un mosaico (opus tessellatum) bícromo y de tema geométrico que pavimentaba una de las cenefa exterior formada por roleos y triángulos, está decorado con círculos secantes que componen materiales arqueológicos que contextualizan el hallazgo, el mosaico se puede datar en la primera mitad del IV d. C., correspondiendo en este caso a una reforma del espacio original. Palabras Clave: arqueología urbana, Calatayud, Imperio Romano (siglos I-V d. C.), complejo termal (balnea), mosaico.

Certains points faibles de la théorie qui se réfère à la guérison d’Augusto en Turiaso:
Avec cette étude nous prétendons démontrer que la guérison d’Augusto et de ses doléances
hépatiques en utilisant des eaux froides selon la prescription d’Antonio Musa ne s’est pas
produite en Turiaso. Pour autant la tête dénommée «Tête d’Augusto» réalisée dans carneola
n’est pas une offrande liée à cet événement. Ceci met en question toute la théorie qui
se réfère à l’existence d’un Santuario dédié au culte des eaux sacrées de Turiaso dédié à
Minerva Medica. De manière parallèle, la théorie qui explique l’épigraphe Silbis de certaines
monnaies de Turiaso comme une nymphe aquatique appuyée par son interprétation comme
Salus perd sa force.

The building located just south of Sarmizegetusa Regia’s precinct, regarded over time as deposit or metallurgical workshop, prison, temple, theatre, or palace, and known today as “the Roman bath”, has received very little attention from the archaeologists. There is only a very sketchy report recorded in literature that followed the sole known archaeological intervention at the objective, in 1950. However, at the beginning of the nineteenth century the monument had brought attention of the Austrian tax authorities who undertook there extensive excavations. Several antiques enthusiasts visited the monument later on, during the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the next century. The information provided by all of them, although extremely valuable, for having registered a conservation status of the monument much higher than today, remained untapped so far. The paper recovers all available documentary data about this building, most of them novel. Data analysis will be done in a future paper.

La villa romana de Casas de Luján se encuentra a 3km de Segóbriga, Cuenca, y se descubrió junto con otras 5 villas en 2010. Entre los restos encontrados se pudo identificar un taller alfarero, una almazara y parte de unos baños pertenecientes a la domus, sobre los que se centra la presente comunicación. Los baños cuentan con un praefurnium, un caldarium un tepidarium y una natatio que se pudieron excavar parcialmente. En la sala caliente se halló un mosaico bícromo, ya en pate amortizado, cuyas características nos permitirían fechar la primera construcción de estas estructuras en el primer cuarto del siglo I d.C. Los restos excavados corresponden a los derrumbes de los edificios, acaecidos hacia finales del siglo I d.C. al tiempo que se estaban realizando reformas, constatadas en la natatio. Estos baños constituyen uno de los escasos ejemplos hallados en la meseta central española.
Presentamos una serie de estructuras relacionadas con los procesos de elaboración del aceite, halladas en Llanos de Pinilla y Casas de Luján, en el entorno de Segóbriga. Estas almazaras forman parte de villas rurales, en donde confluyen instalaciones de transformación de productos agropecuarios, con edificios suntuarios como unos baños en Casas de Luján. Se fechan en el siglo I d.C. y constituyen una completa novedad en su contexto regional.
The roman villa of Casas de Lujan is located 3km from Segóbriga, Cuenca, and it was discovered in 2010 along with 5 others roman villas. Among the remains could be identified a pottery workshop, an oil-mill and part of a bathhouse belonging to the domus, on which the present communication is focus. The bathrooms have a praefurnium, a tepidarium a caldarium and a natatito that could be partially excavated. In the hot room a bichrome mosaic was found, already partly reused.  Its characteristics would allow us to date the first construction of these structures in the first quarter of the I century A.D. The excavated remains correspond to the destructions of the buildings that occurred towards the ends of the I century A.D. when reforms were been made in the natatio. These baths are one of the few examples found in the Spanish central plateau.
We present a series of structures found in Llanos de Pinilla and Casas de Luján in the surroundings of Segóbriga, and related to oil production processes. These mills are part of rural villae, where converge farms for agricultural processing with luxury buildings like the baths of Casas de Luján. They date from the first century A.D. and constitute a complete novelty in their regional context.

Τα λουτρά/οι θέρμες αποτελούν έναν από τους πιο χαρακτηριστικούς κτηριακούς τύπους του ρωμαϊκού πολιτισμού. Το ενδιαφέρον της έρευνάς μας επικεντρώνεται στα λουτρικά συγκροτήματα δημόσιας χρήσης. Ωστόσο, μελετούνται και τμήματα κτηρίων που η χρήση τους είναι αμφιλεγόμενη, εξαιτίας της αποσπασματικής αποκάλυψής τους, καθώς και εξακριβωμένα ιδιωτικής χρήσης οικιακά λουτρά, διότι και αυτά αποτελούν αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι του λουτρικού θεσμού. Στόχος της μελέτης είναι o εντοπισμός των λουτρικών εγκαταστάσεων στη Μακεδονία και η περιγραφή των αρχιτεκτονικών και των κατασκευαστικών τους χαρακτηριστικών. Η εκτενής επιστημονική βιβλιογραφία περί λουτρών, οι λουτρικές εγκαταστάσεις από όλη τη ρωμαϊκή αυτοκρατορία, καθώς και οι αρχαίες φιλολογικές πηγές παρέχουν συγκριτικό υλικό. Τα χρονικά όρια της έρευνας καλύπτουν μια ευρεία περίοδο ίδρυσης λουτρικών εγκαταστάσεων από τα τέλη του 1ου αι. π.Χ. έως τον 6ο αι. μ.Χ. Πρόθεσή μας είναι να ιχνηλατήσουμε τις μεταβολές στην αρχιτεκτονική των λουτρών και στις λουτρικές συνήθειες και κατ' επέκταση να θίξουμε τις αλλαγές του αστικού χώρου και των κοινωνικών ηθών από τη ρωμαϊκή εποχή μέχρι και την περίοδο της ύστερης αρχαιότητας.


The bathing facilities in Macedonia. during the roman imperial and early byzantine period

"Balnea in Dacia – a few comments.
The main topic of the study refers to the small baths discovered in the Roman province of Dacia. There have been made a clear distinction between the
thermae belonging to the legionary fortresses and the balnea pertaining to the auxiliary forts.
The analysis of the current status of research regarding the small baths (balnea) from Dacia led to the conclusion that the large majority of such structures were found in a military milieu, given the fact that the ones of the civil settlement have not been yet sufficiently investigated in order to provide relevant data in this matter. Most probably during the Flavians, the baths are used also by the auxiliary troops, having as a standard feature their placement outside the forts. Prior to this period the inner organisation of the
forts is well defined, without including such types of edifices. This situation is entirely reflected by this
brief study concerning the balnea from Dacia. The troops who built such baths would have had as
models the similar edifices existing in their native provinces, since the taste for public bathing became
widely spread during the Flavian period."

Characteristic for the Roman baths in Caria is the great variety of building types, in both structure and types. Within single typological groups variants were developed. In the course of architectonic development, many changes occurred, but also the original, more simple types endured. Under the influence of domestic traditions, bathing habits were changing, too. Important is also the fact that bath services – especially in eastern parts of the Empire – were in addition to baths also provided in other public buildings (gymnasia).
