A collection of user interface design patterns for workflow information systems is presented. Each Workflow User Interface Pattern (WUIP) is characterized by properties expressed in the PLML markup language for expressing patterns and augmented by additional attributes and models attached to the pattern: the abstract user interface and the corresponding task model. These models are specified in a User Interface Description Language. All WUIPs are stored in a library and can be retrieved within a workflow editor that links each workflow pattern to its corresponding WUIP, thus giving rise to a user interface for each workflow pattern. The software then gathers these UIs and the ones corresponding to workflow tasks into a user interface flow, a new concept introduced for specifying the intertwining of interfaces used by workers and the workflow manager in a single workflow.

Most risk management activity in the healthcare sector is retrospective, based on learning from experience. This is feasible where the risks are routine, but emergency operations plans (EOP) guide the response to events that are both high risk and rare. Under these circumstances, it is important to get the response right the first time, but learning from experience is usually not an option. This case study presents the rationale for taking a proactive approach to improving healthcare organizations' EOP. It demonstrates how the Prospective Hazard Analysis (PHA) Toolkit can drive organizational learning and argues that this toolkit may lead to more efficient improvement than drills and exercises.

The importance and benefits of Business Process Management (BPM) for organizations are nowadays broadly recognized, as not only the business area but also the information technology one are embracing and adopting the paradigm. The implementation of business processes as services helps in reducing the gap between these two areas, easing the communication and understanding of business needs. Although there is a general agreement on the benefits of the joint application of these two paradigms, some issues still need to be addressed; being a key one the automatic generation of services from business process models. In this article, we present MINERVA framework which applies Model Driven Development (MDD) and Service Oriented Computing (SOC) paradigms to business processes for the continuous business process improvement in organizations, supporting the different stages defined in the business process life cycle from modeling to evaluation of its execution.

Root cause analysis is perhaps the most widely used tool in healthcare risk management, but does it actually lead to successful risk control? Are there categories of risk control that are more likely to be effective? And do healthcare risk managers have the tools they need to support the risk control process? This systematic review examines how the healthcare sector translates risk analysis to risk control action plans and examines how to do better. It suggests that the hierarchy of risk controls should inform risk control action planning and that new tools should be developed to improve the risk control process.

Abstract: It is ironical that while business process improvement (BPI) is becoming an established subject field, many research challenges still exist and most organisations are still searching for methods to better manage process change. Naša naloga bo izvesti modeliranje in simulacijo na osnovi treh delovnih procesov. Delovne procese sestavljajo trije pravilniki, ki se izvajajo na Fakulteti za informacijske študije v Novem mestu, in sicer: Pravilnik o anketiranju študentov, pravilnik o študentih s posebnim statusom ter pravilnik o izvajanju delovne prakse. Vse tri pravilnike bomo najprej opisali in nato izdelali tabelo aktivnosti in tabelo lastnosti (metodologija TAD) za vsak delovni proces. Pomagali si bomo s programskim orodjem iGrafx, kjer bomo izvedli modeliranje in simulacijo. Na podlagi rezultatov simulacije bomo ugotovili kako posamezna aktivnost vpliva na celoten proces ter podali predlog za izboljšavo le-te.

The success of developing service networks rely on obtaining a correct understanding of the end-to-end business processes. However, there are major concerns as to the lack of research efforts to examine methods to successfully manage the complexity of service networks. The insufficient communication efforts between business and technical experts results in a dissatisfactory service delivery and the inability to predict and measure the service network performance. This literature survey is initiated with purpose of finding a novel way to represent business processes in service networks and analyses the process performance. Specifically, we discuss the need to conceive tools and techniques to manage the complexity of service networks without jeopardising the performance of service networks and provide an overview of current simulation-based modelling approaches and optimising business processes.

Τα αποτελέσματα της παγκοσμιοποίησης και της τεχνολογικής εξέλιξης τα τελευταία είκοσι χρόνια αύξησαν το ρυθμό των επιχειρηματικών αλλαγών και το βαθμό του ανταγωνισμού σε σχέση με το παρελθόν. Προσπαθώντας να ανταποκριθούν στις πραγματοποιούμενες αλλαγές, οι θεωρητικοί της Διοίκησης Επιχειρήσεων προσπάθησαν να εισάγουν νέες ιδέες που θα μπορούσαν να βοηθήσουν τις επιχειρήσεις να επιβιώσουν στη νέα απαιτητική πραγματικότητα. Οι ιδέες που αναπτύχθηκαν και παρουσιάστηκαν κατά καιρούς δεν ήταν όλες το ίδιο επιτυχημένες και εύστοχες, ούτε και απόλυτα πρωτότυπες, αφού στην πλειοψηφία των περιπτώσεων στηρίζονταν σε παλαιότερες θεωρίες επαναδιατυπωμένες ή εμπλουτισμένες με ορισμένα νέα στοιχεία. Ορισμένες από τις πιο επιτυχημένες νέες θεωρίες που παρουσιάστηκαν, παρότι εκ πρώτης άποψης δείχνουν διαφορετικές μεταξύ τους, στην πραγματικότητα έχουν έναν κοινό πυρήνα, ενώ αρκετά συχνά αλληλοσυμπληρώνονται. Purpose -The New Zealand Benchmarking Club (NZBC), a multi-organisational network, aimed to improve the performance of member organisations through best practice benchmarking. The purpose of this paper is to critique the NZBC self-assessment process, report the scores for self-assessments from 2000-2002, and present an analysis of the 2001 self-assessment data. Design/methodology/approach -A questionnaire measured the improvement rate of NZBC organisations through annual self-assessments against the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence (CPE). Training was provided for facilitators in each organisation, who supported teams of four to six persons who completed the self-assessment. Correlation coefficients of pairs of CPE categories and items were used to identify strong relationships between them. Findings -Self-assessment data from 2001 identified 57 strong relationships between different CPE categories and items. The strongest correlation identified (0.94) among CPE items was found between "customer focused results" and "financial and market results". Acting on the self-assessment results, management initiatives were implemented and scores in 2002 showed significant improvements over 2001.

Many advances in the information technology (IT) area have changed modern business practices. Such phenomenon has given a notion that human collaboration in supply chain management (SCM) has become more possible. In this third era of Internet technology, social media has been widely recognized as the most promising technology to socially connect people in virtual ways. Looking at these facts, this paper investigates the potential use of social media in SCM. This paper aims to explore the drivers of the use of social media for tightening human collaboration in the whole supply chain and to provide a framework of social media integration in SCM. Also, several rule of thumbs in implementing the integration are briefly described. This paper concludes that the integration of social media into SCM have required companies to understand the characteristics of SCM integration, the functional building blocks embedded in social media, and potential effects and impacts in the new environment. Any firm has to adapt social media into all business processes, meaning that strong attentions have to be addressed to the social media integration phases into supply chain as well as the integration phase of supply chain itself. Due to the fact that this topic still on its way to be a matured knowledge, this paper throws an initiation to understand the full potential of social media as well as the integration of social media to support human collaboration in SCM.

The intent of this review is to understand the operations and position strategy of BlaBlaCar. This paper summarized market research, influencing factors of emerging strategies, and recommendations for BlaBlaCar. These recommendations included ranked projects that were assigned an internal or external opportunity with SWOT and categorized in the market by PESTLE analysis. A change impact analysis will support the prioritization of strategies presented. Overall, the product development strategy is straddled globally while the market development strategy is prioritized to maintain profitability and customer retention. As well a detailed process was included to assess emerging markets. Supporting these goals will require a change in culture, organizational structure, and goal alignment. A three-phase implementation plan was outlined. The first phase validation of project rankings, business case creation, and change impact analysis. The second phase was dedicated to communication strategy to create a communication plan. The third phase is dedicated to the management of progress of the project pipeline. I believe these results will be of major importance, not only to BlaBlaCar, but to many ride sharing companies in need of producing new strategic solutions with detailed information about the major factors to keep up with and to create new markets.

Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems provide key capabilities to the coalition and national command authorities for intelligence collection, exploitation and battle management. ISR systems support the full range of component commanders at all levels of command. Further, both coalition and national command authorities may employ exploited and pre-exploited ISR information in the development of politico-military options for military and civil operations within an area of operations (AO). As a result, ISR information provides a critical piece of information for both military commanders and their civilian counterparts operating in the same AO and will likely be in demand for contingency operations from disaster relief to military conflict. This paper will present the key findings of experimentation employing network enabled databases and ISR management tools for dissemination of ISR data and information. Subjects to be addressed include but are not limited to information security and cross domain data transfer, network resource allocation and tools provided for review and minimization of bandwidth requirements, tasking and management of ISR systems by end users outside of traditional networks, communications capabilities and limitations realized through collaboration functions and web enabled applications as well as ISR command and control in an open network of multiple end users.

This paper looks at: (a) the considerations in formulating or selecting a suitable business improvement methodology; (b) the approach given the challenges of understanding problem types that can exist and that must be solved for; and (c) the cultural barriers on any mine site that can prevent adoption and success of the chosen approach.

Business process reengineering (BPR) can help organisations to identify and improve their business processes. A major problem is the high volume of business process datasets with characteristics such as high dimensionality, noise, uncertainty in process datasets and complicated interactions among process variables. Data mining (DM) techniques facilitate the identification and analysis of business processes, and improve their performance by extracting the hidden knowledge in business process datasets. In this paper, we present the application of DM to BPR, based on two novel approaches. By a literature review, the first approach proposes DMbBPR model, mainly focuses on the applications of data mining to each BPR phase. The second approach presents a novel combinational model based on the knowledge management cycle and CRISP-DM process in the framework of process monitoring architecture. To achieve better results, both approaches should be considered simultaneously in order to effectively identify, analyse, and improve business processes.

The adoption of systems-focused risk assessment techniques has not led to measurable improvement in the rate of patient harm. Why? In part, because these tools focus solely on understanding problems, and provide no direct support for designing and managing solutions (i.e., risk control). This second installment of a 2-part series on rebalancing risk management describes a structured approach to bridging this gap: The Active Risk Control (ARC) Toolkit. A pilot study is presented to show how ARC Toolkit can improve the quality of risk management practice.

This article examines five common misunderstandings about case-study research: (a) theoretical knowledge is more valuable than practical knowledge; (b) one cannot generalize from a single case, therefore, the single-case study cannot contribute to scientific development; (c) the case study is most useful for generating hypotheses, whereas other methods are more suitable for hypotheses testing and theory building; (d) the case study contains a bias toward verification; and (e) it is often difficult to summarize specific case studies. This article explains and corrects these misunderstandings one by one and concludes with the Kuhnian insight that a scientific discipline without a large number of thoroughly executed case studies is a discipline without systematic production of exemplars, and a discipline without exemplars is an ineffective one. Social science may be strengthened by the execution of a greater number of good case studies.

The public sector is subject to constant changes. In order to tackle the current financial, social, and political challenges, public sector organizations all over the world need to rethink, adapt, and change their underlying service processes. Prompted by these challenges public managers have turned to the private sector for solutions. By facilitating resource efficiency and allowing for a more straightforward way of service provision, business process change (BPC) assumes a leading role in the transformation of public administrations. Yet, in the past decades many BPC projects both in private and in public have failed to realize their objectives. However, the public sector should not only learn from its own failures, but also from the mistakes made in private sector BPC implementations. A huge amount of case studies exist on the topic of BPC which provide comprehensive reviews of past failures and successes. So far, this rich pool of knowledge has remained unexploited. This paper identifies the main differences between private and public sector BPC implementations as reported in 128 case studies. Based on this meta-case analysis, we juxtapose current consensuses as well as contentious issues.

This paper presents an application of BPMN for the modeling of Tax Administration processes within the One-Stop-Shop system for the registration of business entities, using a modern software tool. The primary goal of this paper is to draw attention to a possible application of BPMN and to present some identified difficulties in ensuring simple means of process modeling and information sharing among the business users and process implementers. It was shown that BPMN facilitates communication among the key parties in cross-organizational e-Government. Additionally, the conclusion was that using BPMN can be a useful starting point for highlighting critical points in collaboration of involved processes.

The purpose of this study is to explain how the processes were improved in a lean
organization through value stream mapping application. It is suggested that value stream mapping enables to observe product value stream, notice the sources of waste in the process, identify improve-ment points in product flow and develop more efficient processes. The application of value stream mapping was implemented in XYZ company, which is significant knowledge and expe-rience of value stream mapping in the automotive sector. XYZ company is on the ISO 500 and employs more than 800 employees. In this study value stream mapping was applied on a single company level. The current state map was drawn after selecting rear seat as product family; then the value stream in the current state map was examined, the future state map designed, and improvements explicated to reach a future state. It was concluded that the number of employees in the company decreased, space-saving was realized, defects diminished, produc-tion capacity increased, line stop time decreased, lead time shortened, finished product inven-tory decreased and production was balanced. It is suggested that value stream mapping may be considered as a significant tool in the improvement of processes and providing significant benefits to businesses planning to be lean organizations.

Phronetic organizational research is an approach to the study of management and organizations focusing on ethics and power. It is based on a contemporary interpretation of the Aristotelian concept phronesis, usually as ‘prudence’. Phronesis is the ability to think and act in relation to values, to deliberate about ‘things that are good or bad for humans’ in the words of Aristotle (1976:1140a24–b12). Phronetic organizational research effectively provides answers to the following four value-rational questions, for specific problematics in management and organization studies: 1. Where are we going with this specific management problematic? 2. Who gains and who loses, and by which mechanisms of power? 3. Is this development desirable? 4. What, if anything, should we do about it?

Development of Star model for data warehouse (DW) requires ample amount of time, experience, expertise and adequate knowledge of data warehouse designing steps. As an alternative to data warehouse designing steps, transformation techniques are used. These techniques transform ER model (of relational OLTP) to Star model/s. In this study, we present and evaluate a systematic approach for transformation of ER model to Star model. Based on an experiment, we prove that, by using our approach, inexperienced designers can produce Star models identical to the star models produced by experienced data warehouse designers.

This paper studies a fourth emerging service model of cloud computing, Business Process as a Service (BPaaS). BPaaS is generating hype but it is under researched with a lack of clarity regarding how BPaaS differentiates itself from other service models and what opportunities and challenges it presents for management and organisations attempting to implement it. In this paper we examine the theoretical underpinnings of BPaaS with a view to developing an understanding of the potential value of adopting the BPaaS model and its implications for the realisation of business value from cloud computing. We develop the SEIFS framework (Situation, Elemental, Integration, Flexibility, and Scalability) to provide guidance in the classification of cloud services as BPaaS or otherwise and attempt to validate this framework by using a series of case studies based in Irish cloud computing firms. Our paper aims to contribute to the literature by addressing confusion in the classification of cloud services, and specifically BPaaS. We also provide insights for prospective BPaaS providers to factor into their service design and discuss how BPaaS can provide a competitive advantage. Finally, we identify and discuss a number of areas for future research.

At the same time that case studies are widely used and have produced canonical texts, it may be observed that the case study as a methodology is generally held in low regard, or is simply ignored, within the academy. For example, only 2 of the 30 top-ranked U.S. graduate programs in political science require a dedicated graduate course in case study or qualitative methods, and a full third of these programs do not even offer such a course. In contrast, all of the top 30 programs offer courses in quantitative methods and almost all of them require training in such methods, often several courses. In identifying this paradox of the case study’s wide use and low regard, Gerring rightly remarks that the case study survives in a “curious methodological limbo,” and that the reason is that the method is poorly understood. In what follows, we will try to resolve Gerring’s paradox and help case study research gain wider use and acceptance.

Generally, this is divide and conquer approach in analyzing problems. Along the time, various Trace Clustering approaches have been developed and made it questionable what to use as appropriate tools and techniques at what kind of environment. Thus, characterizing strengths and capabilities in those clustering techniques is essential in order to efficiently utilize them in applications. This research overlooks at concurrent trace clustering approaches for discovering process behavior as mainstream and exceptional based on both control flow perspective and case perspective.
