Cinema history

Soutenu par le Labex ICCA, ce séminaire entend contribuer à fédérer, dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire, un ensemble de travaux se proposant d’étudier les films ou les cinémas dits « de genre », tout en réfléchissant aux différents sens de ce qualificatif polysémique et à la variété de ses usages créatifs, professionnels et cinéphiliques.
Il déroulera une fois par mois le vendredi (15h-17h) à la Maison de la Recherche de la Sorbonne Nouvelle. Les propositions sont à envoyer avant le 15/09.

Der Aufsatz untersucht am Beispiel Hamburgs, wie vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg das Kino zu einem Ort von Kinderöffentlichkeit wurde. Zwischen pädgogischen Strategien, den Filmgenuss Heranwachsender zu regulieren, und Strategien symbolischer Herausforderung der Erwachsenen durch Kinder und Jugendliche entwickelte sich die Praxis, das Kino temporär zu einem von Halbwüchsigen eigensinnig genutzten Raum zu machen.

Since the birth of cinema, and throughout its history, there have been movies set in the world of cinema itself, portraying, e.g. a film being made, or an audience watching it, or the society revolving around the film industry. Very often such movies are centred on the life of the many kinds of people who are involved in filmmaking, from producers to directors, from scriptwriters to actors and actresses. And yet Hollywood "movies about the movies", in particular, are inherently paradoxical in this respect. If they allow you to peep at their secrets, they only do so up to a certain point, because Hollywood, as a myth, must preserve its aura and cannot risk losing its somewhat magical, even mysterous appeal to mass cultures. This Dossier is a general introduction to a project which includes more specific explorations of the topic of "movies about movies". El presente artículo analiza de manera documentada los primeros años de la exhibición cinematográfica en Zacatecas. Los datos ofrecidos suponen una actualización de la bibliografía existente ya que se han consultado las fuentes documentales de los archivos locales. El artículo relata una parte importante del hecho cinematográfico de los orígenes, al tiempo que aporta nuevos datos para la historiografía del cine mexicano.

Personaje clave en el desarrollo del cine mexicano como industria e instrumento narrativo, el director michoacano Miguel Contreras Torres recibió un homenaje por parte de la Filmoteca de la UNAM. El reconocimiento a su trayectoria se dio a través de una exposición y un ciclo de películas que se proyectaron en el Salón Cinematográfico Fósforo.
"Miguel Contreras Torres (1889-1981). Una historia recuperada" es el título del montaje museográfico que incluye fotografías, guiones, libros, pinturas, carteles, fotomontajes y vestuario, así como copias de las películas otorgadas por Video Universal y restauradas por la institución, que pretende lograr un acercamiento a la historia de esa época en México, así como a la vida y obra de este director y productor mexicano.

The essay traces how the Ottoman past, the 'uprooting experience,' and the refugees’ effort to assimilate into Greek society are represented in some Greek films of the 1960s and 1970s. These films bear testimony to the acculturation process that led to the development of an Asia Minor and Pontic ethnic identity. Moreover, they reflect the construction of divergent collective narratives which accommodated the refugee experience in the framework of twentieth-century Greek history. The films in question prove that although the cultural content of ethnicity may change and different generations may reconstruct group “archaeology” according to the shifting collective ideas in the host society, this does not lead to the dissolution of ethnic identity, which may be retained or even strengthened in importance depending on the circumstances.

Resumen:
Las películas de los hermanos Dardenne son documentos vivos, poblados de perso-najes marginales y excluidos, que ofrecen enormes posibilidades para reflexionar desde múltiples espacios educativos. Su obra presenta un reconocido estilo personal autoral, tanto en la forma como en las historias que aborda, susceptible de análisis y profundización. Adentrarse en ella y bucear su estilo narrativo es el objetivo de este estudio. Para  materializarlo se esboza, al inicio, la tradición europea creadora de nuevas formas de expresión fílmica a lo largo del siglo XX -desde el naturalismo poético francés hasta llegar al movimiento nórdico “Dogma 95”- para explorar, más detenidamente, a continuación la produc-ción de los directores belgas: siguiendo un planteamiento evolutivo que transita desde sus primeros trabajos que antecederán a “La promesa” (1996) hasta su último film, “El niño de la bicicleta”( 2011), en este texto se analizan las obras de ficción de los hermanos y el estilo característico que pre-domina en ellas.  Planos cortos, que trans-miten su propia vida interior, y de larga duración para que se pueda seguir atentamente la acción, filmación continua-da en el mismo orden programado en el guión, ausencia de música intrusiva, imá-genes despojadas de toda clase de buenos sentimientos… el sello personal de los Dardenne abre cauces novedosos de expresión comunicativa tan poderosos como creativos.

Abstract:
The movies of the Dardenne brothers are living documents filled with marginalized characters that offer a great opportunity to think and reflect  from different educational perspectives.  Their work  has a very personal composition; for being ahead of its time and for the depth of its analysis. With this essay, we try to explore and dive deep in their narrative style. For that, we first draft their influences taken from the European tradition with its new ways of filmic expressions, throughout the XX century: from the poetic French naturalism to the Nordic movement “Dogma 95”, to explore in bigger detail, after that, the influence of the productions of Belgian directors: all of these following an evolutionary approach that goes from their first movies before “La promesse” (1996), to their last film, “The kid with a bike” ( 2011),in this text, we analyze their fictional tales and their characteristic style.  Close ups that describe an inner life and long shots to attend to the events in detail. The filming is always done in the order planned in the screenplay, there is always a lack of intrusive music, images without any kind of good feelings…the style of the Dardenne brothers which is an open door to new communicative styles, all of them powerful and creative.

SAŽETAK: Tema vojske važna je za politiku, identitet, dominantnu kulturu te kinematografiju najrazličitijih zemalja, a socijalistička Jugoslavija nije bila nikakvom iznimkom. Filmovi hrvatskog redatelja Dejana Šorka Oficir s ružom i Najbolji, snimljeni pred sam kraj SFRJ, mogli bi biti znakoviti za tu temu u Hrvatskoj Jugoslaviji i za opće filmske tendencije kao što su obnova žanrovskog i klasičnofabularnog filma 1980-ih, a Pula je, dakako, jedna od najvažnijih, ili čak najvažnija pozornica svih kinematografskih silnica tog razdoblja. Pri tom je posebno važan bio film Oficir s ružom (s radnjom iz poratnog razdoblja), dok je Najbolji (s radnjom iz suvremenosti) zanemaren i zaboravljen. Prvi spomenuti film u Puli je osvojio i dvije važne nagrade (za scenarij i glavnu mušku ulogu), te je svojom popularnošću postao jedan od paradigmatskih filmova svoga vremena. Najbolji je očito smišljen da bi dominantnu jugoslavensku kulturu, i njenu vojsku, pokušao približiti novim generacijama no, s obzirom da u njemu vojska nije tek pozadina dramskih ili melodramskih zbivanja (kao u Oficiru s ružom), a spektakularnošću se nije mogao mjeriti s, primjerice, američkim filmovima koji slave vojsku, ne čudi da nije mogao postići popularnost kojom bi opravdao svoju temeljnu propagandnu namjenu. Uvod Na Pulskom filmskom festivalu dosta često su pažnju medija, publike, kritike i žirija privlačili filmovi vojničke tematike, ostvareni raznovrsnim poetikama te u različitim žanrovima, a često su to bili i pravi partizanski filmovi, koji su osvajali i prestižne nagrade – primjerice Kozara Veljka Bulajića 1962. godine, Sutjeska Stipe Delića i Bombaši Predraga Golubovića 1973., Užička republika Žike Mitrovića 1974. godine, i tako dalje (usp. Švaco, 1986: 386–389). Spektakularna Bulajićeva Bitka na Neretvi (1969) prikazana je u Puli, ali izvan festivalske konkurencije (Radić, 2004–2013), jer se smatralo da drugi filmovi jednostavno ne bi imali šanse u natjecanju s takvim velefilmom, svejugoslavenskom naracijom oko koje se čitava država ujedinila da bi je sačinila. S obzirom na poznatu priču da su vojnici (kojih je u Puli bilo smješteno puno) imali važan udio u masama pulske festivalske publike, vjerojatno bi se moglo reći da je vojna tematika na više načina paradigmatska za čitav ovaj festival. Česta filmska prisutnost vojnih motiva i vojne tematike, dakako, nisu nimalo čudni niti specifični samo za razdoblje socijalističke Jugoslavije i ne mogu se obrazložiti samo važnošću vojske i naracije o Narodnooslobodilačkoj borbi za stabilnost i cjelovitost te države. Naracije s vojničkim motivima sasvim su, naime, uobičajena pojava u svjetskim razmjerima, na svim kontinentima, uključujući, dakako, i postjugoslavenske kinematografije. Ima tu i melodrama i filmova za djecu i povijesnih filmova, a u svima njima se prikazuju i tipični ili uzorni nacionalni junaci i povijesne neobičnosti (primjerice austrijski vojnici u Meksiku iz doba tamošnje habsburške vladavine). Nisu tako rijetka, dakako, niti kritička propitivanja vojske, njene ideologije i djelovanja na pojedinca i društvo. Iznimka od te svjetske tendencije, dakle, nije bila ni Jugoslavija, baš kao ni hrvatska u razdoblju prije, između i poslije dviju Jugoslavija – monarhističke i federalne.

Giriş Geleneksel/ana akım sinema çalışmaları-aslında film çalışmaları dememiz çok daha doğru olacaktır-çoğunlukla merkezine filmi koymaktadır; asıl olan filmdir. Bu minvalde, geleneksel/ana akım sinema tarihi çalışmaları da merkezine filmi koyma eğilimindedir. Bu eğilimin sonucu olarak geleneksel/ana akım sinema tarihçisi, film ve filmin etrafında yapılanmış olan sinema endüstrisini oluşturan ögelerin tarihini yazar. Bu tarihyazımında eksen, ürün (filmin ham ve gösterim kopyaları, çekim senaryoları), üretici (aktörler, aktrisler, yapımcılar ve yönetmenler başta olmak üzere diğer çalışanlar), ürünü pazarlayanlar (gösterimi gerçekleşti-renler, salon kayıtları vb.), ürünü tanıtanlar (gazete eleştirileri, eleştirmenler vb.) ve piyasayı düzenleyenler (yayınlar, yasalar, yönetmelikler, sansür kurulu vb.) temelinde kurulmaktadır. Bu tespitlerimizi ulusal geleneksel/ana akım sinema tarihyazımına da yöneltebiliriz. Aşağıda örneklerini göreceğiniz üzere, istisnai çalışmalar haricinde yakın döneme kadar benzer bir yaklaşım izlenmiştir. Diese Arbeit betrachtet die Bauaufgabe Kino genauer, allerdings aus rein architekturhistorischer Sicht, die medien- und sozialgeschichtliche Abhandlung bleibt aufgrund der Komplexität des Themas außen vor. In Kapitel 1 werde ich zunächst kurz die Entwicklungsgeschichte der Kinoarchitektur behandeln, um dann in Kapitel 1.1 zu untersuchen, ob und wie die Umstellung von Stummfilm auf Tonfilm die Kinoarchitektur beeinflusst hat. Im zweiten Kapitel werde ich versuchen einen allgemeinen Grundtypus der Kinoarchitektur zusammen zu fassen, was im darauf folgenden Kapitel 2.1 durch die verschiedenen Kinotypen ergänzt wird. Im den nächsten Kapiteln werde ich die Geschichte und Architektur zweier Beispiele erläutern: Das Moviemento und das Roxy – beide typisch für die Anfänge des Kinos.

Des Portes de la nuit (1946) à Touchez pas au grisbi (1954) en passant par La Môme vert-de-gris (1953), le film noir français d’après-guerre frappe par sa diversité, sa richesse et son originalité.

Diversité des films et des récits : le pessimisme du «réalisme noir» contraste avec l’atmosphère ludique de la «série noire» parodique, elle-même très éloignée de l’univers interlope du «milieu» parisien dépeint dans le film de gangsters… Richesse des talents et des thèmes abordés: du tandem Carné/Prévert à Jacques Becker et Michel Audiard, via des stars comme Simone Signoret, Eddie Constantine ou Jean Gabin, le genre fait appel à des personnalités singulières pour explorer les anxiétés d’une France en mutation, marquée par la Seconde Guerre mondiale et confrontée à l’entrée dans la société de consommation. Singularité artistique et culturelle: loin d’être une simple copie du film noir américain, comme on l’a trop souvent suggéré, le film noir français constitue l’expression nationale d’une forme transnationale, et se distingue à ce titre de Hollywood. Pour évaluer la cohérence de ce genre instable, interroger ses enjeux identitaires et saisir les spécificités hexagonales du «noir», cet ouvrage propose, pour la première fois dans le champ académique, une analyse globale du film noir en France de 1946 à 1960.

The restoration of La battaglia dall’Astico al Piave (Italy, 1918) has been funded by MiC (the Italian Ministry of Culture) and carried out by the University of Udine in collaboration with several film archives. Starting
from a historical-philological and restoration framework, the case study offers some reflections and considerations between the fields of the digital humanities, film preservation, and cinema history.
Furthermore, it provides a concrete opportunity to achieve the two goals of raising awareness about the status of digitized film artefacts, framing them as the result of modelling practices, and documenting the film preservation process as well as the surrounding historical and cultural network in a digital historical-critical infrastructure.

Although Berlin was heavily bombed during the Second World War, and subsequently divided into four sectors, the city's cinemas were quickly re-established after the armistice, and were readily and cheaply available to Berliners. This study examines cinema-going under the exceptional circumstances present in the destroyed and occupied city of Berlin between the end of the war in 1945 and the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic in 1949. The difficult living conditions influenced audience habits. Many cinemagoers attended film showings as an escapist means to temporarily forget their miserable everyday lives. The research is based on archival sources: statistics, newspapers, maps, yellow pages, photographs as well as contemporary advertising material. Special attention is paid to cinema locations, along with the motivations and preferences of the viewers and their mobility between the sectors.

Crime was an integral part of the cinema of the Dutch East Indies (modern Indonesia), representing more than twenty of the hundred-odd films produced domestically between 1926 and 1942. Using secondary sources, this article maps filmic depictions of crime and criminals in Indies cinema. It argues that two types of criminals were given the greatest prominence: the bandit and the vigilante. The former, adapted from various media, appeared in three films in the late 1920s and 1930s: Si Tjonat (1929), Si Ronda (1930), and Si Pitung (1931). The latter, meanwhile, was more common in 1939–1941 and featured prominently in such films as Gagak Item (1939), Kedok Ketawa (1940), and Srigala Item (1941). They were joined by a range of fraudsters, murderers, smugglers, thieves, and thugs. Aside from the vigilantes, whose fight for justice remained unpunished, almost all were ultimately caught and punished, either at the hands of the police, or—more regularly—at the hands of the civilian protagonists.

Tutta Rolf’s career. Rolf was one of the greatest stars in 1930s Swedish cinema. She was also a popular stage actress, vaudeville performer and recording artist. Despite her prominence she has been largely neglected in scholarly work. This thesis aim to bring new knowledge about this underresearched star by conducting basic research. I situate her within the field of star studies by deploying Richard Dyer’s influential theory to abstract a method on how to look at the praxis of Tutta Rolf’s stardom. Thus, I deploy her films, newspapers, Filmjournalen and archival material to tell the story of her early career. My basic assumption, i.e. hypothesis is that there existed a Swedish star system in the 1930s. Earlier there has been a lack of research regarding a potential Swedish star system. Hence, this is an inductive study that will try to bring forward new knowledge about Tutta Rolf, Swedish stardom and its star system that may be used for future research.

Le dossier « Films en miroir. Quarante ans de cinéma japonais (1980-2020) » entend lui aussi se placer sous le signe de cette pluralité pour présenter dans leur hétérogénéité respective, non seulement le « cinéma japonais », mais cette période-cadre de quarante années. Les sept articles rassemblés ici adoptent des angles de vue divers. Fabien Carpentras à propos des films tournés avec le soutien des Forces japonaises d’autodéfense, ou Christopher Hood à propos de certains films catastrophe, prennent pour objet un cinéma grand public, alors que Dimitri Ianni s’intéresse à un genre au public plus restreint (ou les splendeurs et misères du roman porno Nikkatsu). Tom Mes aborde les modes de distribution apparemment secondaires, parfois caduques, du V-Cinema, quand Raphaëlle Yokota considère la place de plus en plus importante prise par la plateforme de streaming Netflix sur le marché japonais. Eléonore Mahmoudian décrit des modes de production aux limites de l’artisanat, à travers le modèle de fonctionnement que le collectif Kuzoku 空族 impose auprès des distributeurs et des critiques. Hao Wen, enfin, analyse des démarches, dites « post-cinéma6 », de production de « contenu(s) » (ou, en l’occurrence et comme le soutient l’auteur à propos du festival MOOSIC LAB, de kontentsu コンテンツ). On constatera toutefois que ces textes aux soucis apparemment divergents ne cessent de se recouper : dire le développement et la postérité du roman porno Nikkatsu demande de comprendre la mue du paysage industriel, d’observer l’émergence de nouvelles sociétés de production et l’apparition de la cassette vidéo et des supports numériques – de voir, donc, comment l’expérience même des spectateur·rice·s se modifie, quand les cinéastes doivent désormais s’adapter aux mutations de leur médium, se plier à ses nouveaux modes de financement, ou en inventer d’autres. Ainsi, à l’arrière-plan de ces textes se dégage un contexte commun, que l’histoire du cinéma japonais reconnaît comme « ère post-studios ».

Avec la généralisation de l'outil numérique au sein de l'industrie cinématographique se pose plus que jamais la question du devenir des films. Les professionnels de la restauration de films, les chercheurs et les archivistes du monde entier ne cessent de démontrer depuis plusieurs années, à l'occasion de colloques, de journées d'étude ou de festivals, que le numérique n'est pas une solution en soi et qu'il entraîne des problèmes d'une complexité inégalée. La promesse d'une « libération matérielle » du médium cinématographique demeure utopique, et les questions de la conservation et de la diffusion des films se font elles plus profondes encore.

Malgré ces avancées techniques, le cinéma reste un art fondamentalement précaire. En raison de la fragilité des supports, qu'ils soient photochimiques ou numériques, les œuvres filmiques peuvent disparaître à tout moment. La « mort des films » ne résulte pas seulement de la disparition des copies, mais aussi de leur altération, et du bouleversement irrémédiable que celle-ci entraîne sur leur contenu et ses possibles interprétations. Films perdus dont ne sont conservés que des projets écrits ou des articles dans des journaux ; films incomplets, décomposés par le temps, ou mutilés lors de leur exploitation ; films inachevés ; films restés à l'état de projets ; ou encore films fantômes, projetés une seule fois devant un public restreint… Ces « films morts » font partie intégrante de l'histoire du cinéma.

En l'absence des matériaux d'origine et de copies, les oeuvres s'incarnent dans des archives films (repérages, rushes, chutes...) et non-film (sources iconographiques, écrites, orales, collections d'appareils et d'accessoires). Les films morts nous renseignent sur la façon de conserver les oeuvres encore en vie, sur des décisions artistiques, économiques, politiques prises lors du développement d'un projet cinématographique... Ils sont parfois même plus instructifs que les œuvres dont l'intégrité a été (supposément) préservée. Alors que la préservation pérenne des copies reste aléatoire, comment faire revivre une œuvre disparue ? Et quel est le statut des « films morts » dans la recherche en cinéma et audiovisuel ?

L'altération – voire la disparition – de nombreuses copies passe même parfois inaperçue. La question de la valeur de la copie que nous regardons est donc fondamentale. Elle prend d'autant plus d'ampleur avec l'usage du numérique : la pléthore de normes matérielles et éthiques suscite des usages extrêmement divers, à tel point qu'il semble impossible, malgré le mythe créé par des discours publicitaires omniprésents, de parler de « version définitive » d'un film. Comment doit-on considérer la question de la copie, et donc de la version, que nous, spectateurs, regardons ?

La « mort » des films doit donc être aujourd'hui pensée au regard des questions qu'elle pose à l'historiographie du cinéma. Si la fragilité des œuvres doit absolument être prise en compte, doit-on dès lors repenser le cinéma comme un « art vivant » ?

Pour débattre de ce sujet, nous sommes heureux d'inviter chercheurs, professionnels et doctorants à venir présenter des exemples représentatifs et contribuer à une réflexion théorique générale sur l'écriture de l'histoire du cinéma et la conservation des films.

The archaeology of Persia may be a significant element of the jigsaw of understanding the antecedents of film and moving image – in particular animation. In this paper the roots of the cinematic moving image have been analyzed in tandem with historical artifacts from Persia to consider the possible influence of Persian art and science on the nineteenth century inventors of optical toys that were a crucial step on the developmental path of animation and cinema more generally.

Adapté de Monsieur Ladmiral va bientôt mourir (1945), “testament littéraire” du romancier et scénariste Pierre Bost, Un dimanche à la campagne occupe une position paradoxale dans la filmographie de Bertrand Tavernier. Reçu de façon globalement très positive à sa sortie en 1984, malgré quelques voix discordantes, le film a paradoxalement souvent été décrit comme un simple exercice de style, un “Tavernier en mode mineur” dénué de l’originalité et de l’ambition de Que la fête commence (1975) ou de Coup de torchon (1981).

Visant à dépasser cette vision réductrice, cet ouvrage s’efforce de restituer les complexités toujours actuelles d’une œuvre sans équivalent dans le paysage cinématographique des années 1980, en la replaçant dans son contexte d’émergence. Il se fonde sur l’étude des archives scénaristiques de Tavernier et adopte une approche pluridisciplinaire associant l’histoire du cinéma, l’histoire de l’art et l’historiographie de la France moderne de 1830 à nos jours. Articulant l’analyse filmique et la contextualisation socio-historique, il propose l’hypothèse qu’Un dimanche se présente à la fois comme un allégorique de la création artistique, comme une expérimentation concrète des puissances du cinéma, et comme une réflexion étendue sur le nouveau régime d’historicité issu des mutations du XIXe (dans une acception large du terme : jusqu’en 1914).

Dans cette perspective, il déploie un parcours analytique en trois temps. “De l’écrit à l’écran : la fabrique de l’adaptation”, la première partie met en rapport l’œuvre source et l’œuvre seconde, afin d’identifier de quelles façons celle-ci a réélaboré l’esprit, la visée et la portée du roman de Bost, entre restructuration du sens et amplification de l’émotion. Portant sur “L’art et la manière : la petite musique de Tavernier”, la seconde partie remet en cause l’idée que le film serait dénué d’enjeux narratifs et offrirait un “pastiche impressionniste”, en s’intéressant à sa narration lyrique et à son style à contre-courant. Intitulée “D’une fin de siècle à une autre : explorer la discordance des temps”, la dernière partie se risque à analyser la double ambition historiographique de l’œuvre : filmer le passé en tant que présent, penser le présent au miroir du passé. La conclusion interrogera la façon dont Un dimanche mêle l’art, le cinéma et l’Histoire pour ouvrir de larges fenêtres sur la “Terre Promise” de l’imaginaire.

El Nacimiento de una Nación (1915), obra maestra del cine de Estados Unidos –y por qué no del cine universal- cumplió en febrero de este año, cien años de su primera proyección. El film se dio a conocer sólo cincuenta años después del fin de la Guerra Civil (1861-1865), en un momento de plena expansión imperialista y maduración económica y política de la nación estadounidense. Hoy, al conmemorarse ciento cincuenta años del fin de la Guerra y cincuenta años de la sanción de la Ley del Voto (que en 1965 hizo efectivo el voto de los afroestadounidenses, relegados políticamente de facto hasta ese momento) analizar El Nacimiento de una Nación nos invita a la reflexión del papel que tuvieron –y tienen- las relaciones raciales en la evolución de la historia estadounidense.

Cjelovečernji igrani film Koncert (1954) Branka Belana započinje prizorima tipičnim za ikonografiju ranog socijalizma: bezbrižna i poletna mladež hita u svijetlu budućnost; prenosi koncertni klavir u novi dom kulture te traži nekoga tko će im pomoći u izgradnji socijalističke kulture. Nitko od njih ne zna svirati, no omladinci ne smatraju prevelikim problemom to što ne vladaju jezikom kulturne tradicije. Uz filmove kao što su Slavica Vjekoslava Afrića ili Plavi 9 Kreše Golika, 1 prizore poletnog kolektiva (ne nužno sastavljenog isključivo od mladeži) sadrže čak i filmovi koji se zbog žanrovskih i stilskih sastavnica često tumače implicitno prozapadnima, kao što su to dječji filmovi Sinji galeb i Milioni na otoku Branka Bauera. 2 U Koncertu, međutim, slike poletne mladeži pripadaju samo narativnom okviru; one nisu ključni dio središnje teme filma, a čak ni taj narativni okvir nije temeljno obojen optimizmom, jer se u njemu polet mladeži kontrastira s melankolijom Eme, šepave glazbenice i učiteljice klavira umorne od života, koju omladinci pronalaze u bijednom podrumu. Veći dio filma sastoji se od klasičnim stilom ispripovijedanih jednodnevnih epizoda burne povijesti u kojima se pojavljuje i Ema, često tek u manjoj mjeri sudjelujući u prikazanim zbivanjima. 1 Negativac iz Plavog 9 (glumi ga Antun Nalis) nogometaš je koji želi biti plaćen za svoj rad, dok su ostale njegove kolege pošteni amateri, koji bez problema sa sportom spajaju čak i rad u industriji. 2 Uz oznaku dječjega filma ovim se djelima može pripisati i žanrovska odrednica trilera. * Točan Belanov udio u pisanju scenarija nije najsigurniji; neki izvori kao scenarista navode samo Desnicu.

The article considers the activities of pianists accompanying silent
cinema. They can be equally related to the history of cinema, the history of music, and piano performance. Musical accompaniment was an important additional means of influencing the viewers and a variable component of the historical film show. This practice is a thing of the past now, along with silent cinema, and attempts to revive it in modern conditions are a mere reconstruction. The author
suggests that it was not the invention of technical capabilities for synchronizing sound and images that determined the aesthetic boundary between the silent and sound era; it was the renunciation of pianists as direct musical accompaniment of the films, the removal of the “human factor”. The most authentic materials for studying the activities of illustrator pianists are interviews and archival filming of musicians who had actual experience in silent film scoring. Of the printed sources, photoplay music—sheet music collections
for tappers—are very informative. There could be one or many authors to such collections. The article analyzes the photoplay music by John Stepan Zamecnik and Ernö Rapée. The conclusion is that the plays included in one-author collections are distinguished by the simplicity of form, genre definiteness, and recurrence of musical language. By contrast, compiled collections including works from different eras composed by different authors, systematized by themes, are
stylistically diverse. Using pieces from photoplay music collections, as well as from popular classical melodies and contemporary dance music, illustrators compiled their “soundtracks”, linking them by composed or improvised parts. As time passed by, “taper culture” revealed its patterns, which later became the basis of cinema music in the sound era and was clearly manifested in the work of Shostakovich. The author draws several parallels between the recommendations of the photoplay music compilers and the artistic practices of filmmakers of the second
half of the twentieth century. Speaking about the revival of silent film illustrators as a profession in the modern cultural space, the author emphasizes that piano helps to preserve the artistic integrity of silent pictures for modern viewers. This activity of pianists is interpreted as one of the branches of historically informed performance. The article offers examples of similar specific art projects.
In conclusion, it is emphasized that modern cinema, by the way it preserves and reproduces reality, has become a totally technical art. In mass cinema, recordings of live symphony orchestras are being replaced by less expensive computer phonograms. The author sees this as the next aesthetic boundary beyond which the cinema will enter its digital age.

В статье рассматривается деятельность пианистов-аккомпаниаторов в немом кинематографе. Она в равной степени принадлежит истории кино, истории музыки и фортепианного исполнительства. Музыкальное сопровождение было важным дополнительным средством воздействия на зрителя и вариативным компонентом исторического киносеанса. Эта практика ушла в прошлое вместе с немым кинематографом и попытки ее возрождения в современных условиях являются реконструкцией. Автор высказывает предположение, что эстетическая граница между эпохами немого и звукового кино определяется не появлением технических возможностей
синхронизации звука и изображения, а отказом от участия пианиста в непосредственном музыкальном сопровождении фильма, снятием «человеческого фактора».
Наиболее аутентичными материалами для изучения деятельности пианистов-иллюстраторов являются интервью и архивные съемки музыкантов, имевших реальный опыт сопровождения немых фильмов. Среди печатных источников весьма информативны кинотеки — специальные нотные сборники для таперов. Эти сборники могли быть полностью авторскими или компилятивными. В статье анализируются кинотеки Джона Стефана Замекника и Эрне Рапе́. В результате делается вывод, что пьесы, входящие в авторские сборники, отличаются простотой формы, жанровой определенностью, вторичностью музыкального языка. Компилятивные сборники, собранные из систематизированных по темам произведений разных эпох и авторов, характеризуются стилистической пестротой.
Пользуясь заготовками из кинотек, в также популярными классическими мелодиями и современными танцами, иллюстраторы компилировали свой «саундтрек», сочиняя или импровизируя связки между номерами. В сфере «таперской культуры» выявлялись закономерности, ставшие впоследствии
основой киномузыки эры звукового кинематографа, что наглядно проявляется в творчестве Д.Д. Шостаковича. Автор проводит несколько параллелей между рекомендациями авторов кинотек и художественной практикой кинематографистов второй половины ХХ столетия. При рассмотрении фактов возрождения в современном культурном пространстве профессии иллюстраторов немого кино, подчеркивается, что фортепиано помогает сохранить для современного зрителя художественную целостность немых картин. Эта деятельность пианистов трактуется как одно
из ответвлений направления исторически информированного исполнительства. Приводятся примеры конкретных художественных проектов подобного плана.
В заключение подчеркивается, что современное кино стало по способу фиксации и воспроизведения полностью техническим искусством. В массовом кино происходит замена записи живого симфонического оркестра бюджетной компьютерной фонограммой. Автор видит в этом следующую эстетическую границу, за которой воспоследует кино цифровой эпохи.

Resumen
Invasor, penúltima película de Daniel Calparsoro realizada en 2012, viene a sumarse a todo un corpus fílmico que, desde la cinematografía española, incursiona en el género negro desde la órbita del neo-noir. Este se consolida como nuevo género, fruto de la evolución, en época contemporánea, del film noir clásico. La presencia en España de películas construidas en torno a elementos y convenciones noir es un hecho evidente aunque aparentemente aún no completamente reconocido. El filme de Calparsoro, además de utilizar el género para realizar una personal lectura más o menos oscura de una etapa concreta de la política y la sociedad españolas, cristaliza muchos de esos elementos, poniendo en evidencia la fuerte presencia de la que, sobre todo en las últimas décadas, el género negro goza en nuestro país.

Abstract
«Shadowland. "Invasor" as an example of Spanish Neo-Noir». Invasor (2012) is Daniel Calparsoro's last but one piece of work. Within Spanish cinematography, this film joins a while film corpus that treads into the noir genre from the perspective of neo-noir. The latter confirming as a new genre itself, resulting from the contemporary evolution of classic films noirs. In Spain, the presence of films built upon noir elements and conventions becomes apparent; though it seems it is not completely acknowledged yet. Calparsoro's film adopts the genre to take a personal-and more or less dark-approach to a particular stage of politics and society in Spain. What's more, the film crystallizes many of these elements and bespeaks the genre's strength in Spain, especially in the last decade.

Fin-de-siècle Istanbul was not only the political and commercial center of the Ottoman Empire but also the main hub for socio-cultural events and entertainment. The spectacles’ venues -both theatrical and non-theatrical spaces, hosted film exhibitions before the introduction of permanent cinema-houses (circa 1908) in the city. Itinerant exhibitors screened their film repertoires at coffeehouses, taverns, pubs, schools, museums, and gardens. Several international film companies gradually initiated cinema businesses, particularly in the field of film exhibition and distribution, during and in the years following the First World War (1914-1918). Pathé was the first one to start the business in Istanbul, then American and Russian companies began to expand their own holds. The Ottoman cinema market boomed because of this international network and aggressive competition.  Itinerant exhibitions (and or non-theatrical ones) dominated until 1908; cinema-houses became popular later with only sporadic use of itinerant exhibition. As an ‘international tradable product,’ films became available in fin-de-siècle Istanbul from several channels, and this situation posed various questions regarding the technological, material and spatial conditions of film exhibitions.
This paper intends to present the marketing conditions of cinema in the empire, along with the expansion of multiple international companies, their ways of circulating and exhibiting films. It relies on extensive archival materials, in the form of governmental decrees, consular and trade reports, press reviews from daily newspapers, cinema and theater journals.
