When I first began working in research (1970), the limits I came across while studying cognitive functions led me, initially, to favour the video recordings of finalised behaviours so
that I could enrich the data collection. Then, faced with new limits due to the exclusion of everything that was not visible and recordable, I was led to remobilise the “guided introspection” in order to gain access to the subject’s perspective. After having explored all the bibliography on the benefits and critics of introspection (end of 19th, first part of 20th), I came to realise, after a few others1, that there were no decisive critics against using retrospective introspection2 but that, on the other hand, there were no other expert systematic techniques for recording and generating these verbalisations. So I created a specific interview technique to guide the introspections of lived experiences: the explicitation interview, followed by the self-explicitation technique, in which the researcher takes himself as the subject of his study and produces written descriptions of his own experience.

26 L'accès aux traces mnémoniques: l'entretien d'explicitation comme une aide à la remémoration et à la description des vécus Pierre Vermersch (Chapitre d'un livre collectif sur l'utilisation des Traces dans les recherches en sciences humaines) La psychologie, à la différence d'autres sciences, a un objet d'étude à double face, l'une observable ou enregistrable dans le présent, comme le sont les gestes, les verbalisations, les mimiques, les résultats matériels de l'action ; l'autre invisible, relevant de la subjectivité et directement accessible au chercheur par la seule verbalisation introspective de celui qui l'a vécu. L'histoire ancienne ou l'archéologie ont encore accès aux traces matérielles des vécus, aux écrits, mais ne peuvent plus recueillir la parole. La technique que j'ai créée à la fin des années 80 cherche à documenter la face invisible et développe l'introspection rétrospective et sa verbalisation : je l'ai nommée « entretien d'explicitation ». Comprendre la nécessité d'une nouvelle technique d'entretien, peut être abordé selon deux points de vue. Tout d'abord, il n'existait pas de technique d'entretien centrée sur l'introspection du vécu, les chercheurs ayant pratiqué le recueil de données par introspection (début du XXème siècle, comme l'école de Würzburg, Binet, Burloud, Titchener) avaient très peur de poser des questions, craignant beaucoup d'induire des réponses, et se contentaient donc de recueillir les témoignages spontanés. A mon époque, les techniques d'entretien existantes étaient soit d'inspiration clinique (entretien non directif par exemple), soit orientées vers le recueil des représentations et des opinions, méthodes typiques des recherches sociologiques. Il n'y avait donc pas de techniques disponibles pour mes buts de recherche : la description fine de l'activité cognitive. Mais de plus, et c'est mon second point de vue, une fois le principe du recours à l'introspection admis, il fallait encore pour avoir l'idée de la développer sous la forme d'une technique, dépasser un présupposé tacite présent depuis toujours aussi bien chez les philosophes que chez les psychologues, selon lequel l'introspection allait de soi, qu'il suffisait de vouloir la pratiquer pour qu'elle produise des résultats. Un peu comme si par le seul fait d'être doté d'une voix, nous sachions tous chanter l'opéra, ou par le fait d'avoir des yeux et des mains, nous sachions tous dessiner un portrait ressemblant. Les compétences de base et les outils sont certes bien là, à l'état brut, reste à les déployer, à les exercer, pour leur faire atteindre une vraie performance de chanteur ou de portraitiste. La méthode d'interview que j'ai développée a pour but de palier aux déficiences introspectives de la majorité des sujets en apportant une aide, un guidage respectueux et non inductif des réponses du sujet. Et plutôt que de passer plusieurs années à se former eux-mêmes à l'introspection descriptive, il est possible à un chercheur de suivre une formation de quelques jours pour apprendre à guider l'introspection d'un autre que soi. En fait, il devra apprendre 1/ à guider l'accès aux traces mnésiques accessibles, 2/ apprendre à faciliter la posture descriptive plutôt que des commentaires ou des opinons, de façon à documenter les détails du déroulement du vécu, et 3/ et enfin apprendre à gérer avec éthique et efficacité la dimension relationnelle sur laquelle tout interview repose. On a donc trois ensemble de compétences de guidage à former. Dans ce chapitre et dans l'objectif du livre sur les Traces dans la recherche, je vais particulièrement développer le point 1, c'est-à-dire la possibilité et les conditions pour aider quelqu'un à accéder aux traces mnésiques d'un moment d'un vécu passé singulier (chaque mot à son importance, on le verra plus tard). Les autres aspects sont décrits dans mon livre de base sur la technique (Vermersch 1996). Ce chapitre est donc conçu pour montrer la faisabilité d'un accès aux traces mnésiques. Il est construit en trois temps : A/ Présenter une critique de la psychologie expérimentale de la mémoire, qui a fait d'innombrables constats de déficience de la mémoire humaine, mais n'a jamais explorée ce qu'il était possible d'obtenir en aidant le sujet dans son accès aux traces ; B/ Proposer un modèle théorique qui rende compte de la possibilité d'éveiller les traces déposées dans la mémoire passive et les moyens permettant de créer volontairement l'accès involontaire à cette mémoire; C/ Souligner l'importance pratique et théorique du concept de vécu comme condition de réalisation de l'entretien d'explicitation.

Seventeen years ago Francisco Varela introduced neurophenomenology. He proposed the integrationof phenomenological approaches to first-person experience – in the tradition of Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty – with a neuro-dynamical, scientific approach to the study of the situated brain and body. It is time for a re-appraisal of this field. Has neurophenomenology already contributed to the sciences of the mind? If so, how? How should it best do so in future? Additionally, can neurophenomenology really help to resolve or dis-solve the “hard problem” of the relation between mind and body, as Varela claimed? The papers in this special issue arose out of a conference organised by the Consciousness and Experiential Psychology Section of theBritish Psychological Society in Bristol, UK, in September 2012. We have invited a representative sample of the speakers at that conference to present their work here. Various papers argue that the first-person methodsvof phenomenology are distinct from, and more robust than, the failed “introspectionist” methods of early modern psychology. The “elicitation interview” emerges as a successful and widely adopted method to have emerged from this field. Phenomenological techniques are already being successfully applied to neuroscientific problems. Various specific proposals for new techniques and applications are made.
It is time to take neurophenomenology seriously. It has proven its worth, and it is ripe with the potential for further immediate, successful applications.
Varela’s key aim was to develop a non-dualising approach to the science of consciousness. The papers in this special issue look at the philosophical and practical details of successfully putting such an approach
into practice.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) ooers rich opportunities for interaction. By varying stimulation parameters (amplitudes, pulse widths and frequencies), EMS can be used to either trigger muscle contractions, and so convey object aaordances or guide user movements, or provide rich haptic feedback. However, the way users' experience changes with these parameters, and EMS in general, is poorly understood. Using a phenomenologically inspired interview technique, the explicitation interview, we study een users' experience of EMS across 48 combinations of stimulation parameters. We synthesize the descriptions of EMS and relate stimulation parameters to categories of experience, such as 'temperature', 'motion', and 'sensitivity'. From the interviews, we explore more general topics in body-based interfaces, including the experience of control, metaphors for having your body actuated, and the relation between EMS parameters and perceived depth and location of sensations. ese ndings provide a vocabulary of EMS experience, and an insight into the relationship between speciic parameters and associated sensations. In turn, this can help designers consider the user experience of EMS when developing interfaces.

An explicitation interview always deals to a lived experience; it is conducted a posteriori. Correspondingly, an essential element of this technique consists in accessing the memory of the lived experience. The possibility of talking about a lived experience, of describing it with precision in every single moment and in all its different phases is therefore based on the activity of recalling in a specific recalling mode that I have called “evocation”. However, being confronted with the task of recalling what we have lived can be a source of stress: “will I remember?” “It seems to me I can’t remember … however …”

– Vivre seule avec d'importantes limites fonctionnelles amène la personne âgée à s'organiser – pratiquement et mentalement – pour se ménager une vie quotidienne en accord avec ses souhaits. Les efforts sont continus, autant pour juguler la douleur physique que pour faire face à la solitude et à la finitude. Cet article s'appuie sur 20 entretiens menés avec des personnes de plus de 80 ans domiciliées dans le canton de Vaud (Suisse) et bénéficiant des services d'aide et de soins à domicile. Les situations concrètes donnent à voir ce que l'« habiter et vieillir » seule à domicile suppose de ressources fonctionnelles et d'astuces, de stratégies pratiques et de raisonnements intimes. En filigrane, les récits évoquent la solitude et l'intégration de la finitude. Les considérations développées sont abordées sous deux angles : la vie qui se déploie entre ses « quatre murs », et habiter son environnement « hors de ses murs ». Nous posons une distinction entre risques vitaux et menaces existentielles et observons que la prévention des premiers est subordonnée au souci de maintenir à l'écart les secondes. La démarche d'enquête inspirée de l'« entretien d'explicitation » ouvre des perspectives de renouvellement du regard pour les soins et l'aide à domicile. Beyond the limits of descriptive introspection: The organizational unconscious and the laws of association. (traduction de : Au-delà des limites de l'introspection descriptive : l'inconscient organisationnel et les lois d'association. 2017,Expliciter 114) Pierre Vermersch 1 This article falls within the framework of the general and historical program that I have always pursued: behavior elucidation. It consists in providing an intimate and detailed description of behavior in order to gain access to its causal intelligibility, or, otherwise said, to understand how it is generated. We, (the GREX) are at the point of (2017) identifying what is not intelligible (the N3) and what cannot be, what never will be elucidated, even with a more complete introspective description, because we (will) encounter the limits of introspection, and therefore the structural limits of the first-person perspective. Fascinating, is it not? Are we at a definitive blocking point or in front of a new opening? 2 These limits stem from the impossibility of describing with detail the production of answers which are the direct expression of the organizational unconscious, the non-repressed, non-pathological unconscious which constantly underlies all our actions. 3 The easiest example is that of an emerging answer, namely when nothing apparent happens between the moment when the question is asked and answered. If there is nothing, it means that there is something. There is no effect without a cause. When there is nothing to describe, the cause is somewhere that cannot be accessed by the subject's self-reflective consciousness. This is called the unconscious. Except that, in the 20 th century (as opposed to the 19 th), the word was monopolized because of its reference to psychoanalysis – founded on a medical framework of clinical practice and based on the concept of repression – and was used to explain why patients were resistant to cures and to account for this unconscious feature by continually connoting a pathological dimension. But there is an organizational unconscious that is not censored, the one that is produced by the permanent and passive formation of the effects of each moment of my life, considered to be moments of exercise (not practicing an exercise, but every time that I exercise myself, I perform skills, acts, identifications aso.). If there is nothing to describe, it is because the very thing producing an answer is working in a concealed manner. This is the demonstration of the unconscious functioning as a Potential, or functioning as a dynamic organizational dimension. I will take time later in this paper to examine examples demonstrating the presence and the dynamic of the organizational unconscious. 4 The purpose of this article is to clarify the mandatory reference to organizational unconscious in behavioral elucidation and rests on the logic of association implied by the techniques that we use to make the schemes that organize conduct accessible. I will proceed in four stages:
