The heralds' compendia are covering a surprising variety of texts, dealing as well with the heralds and their office itself as well as the different ceremonies of chivalry and the organisation and the symbols of the noble society. Presenting themselves nearly as a kind of manuals for the heralds' office, these manuscripts, until now widely neglected, constitute a veritable "kaleidoscope" of the late medieval noble culture. Because, the duties and interests of the heralds of arms surpassed largely their preoccupation with heraldry in stricto sensu: they consist either in diplomacy and noble representation, especially in the preservation and spreading of the honour of the nobility. The aim of the present study is to introduce this promising group of sources, proposing a preliminary classification and interpretation. Therefore it makes use of two different methods. The first one focuses on the manuscripts as material objects, trying to locate their elaboration and reception in their former concrete historical context. The second one studies the texts they are including, stressing the difference between their instrumental and symbolic meaning to present in detail their eventual use and inherent attraction. By these means, the present thesis achieves to demonstrate how noble readers get appropriate the compendia. It explains this phenomenon by a peculiar image of nobility carried by them, which turns them into witnesses for the transition from the feudal society to the uprising princely state. Finally, this thesis propagates a new comprehension of the singular role played by the heralds at the end of the middle ages.

Les compendia des hérauts d'armes réunissent une diversité de textes étonnante. Ceux-ci traitent aussi bien de l'office d'armes en lui-même, que des cérémonies chevaleresques et de la société nobiliaire en général. Se présentant presque comme des manuels dédiés aux Hérauts d'armes, ces manuscrits, qui passèrent jusque là presque totalement inaperçus, constituent un véritable " kaléidoscope " de la culture nobiliaire de la fin du Moyen-Âge. Car les devoirs et les intérêts du héraut d'armes dépassaient largement l'héraldique au sens propre et s'étendaient non seulement à la diplomatie, mais également au cérémoniel de la cour. Avant tout il leur incombait de préserver et de propager l'honneur de la noblesse. Le but de cette étude était de faire connaître cette source prometteuse et d'en proposer une première classification ainsi qu'une première interprétation. Pour ces raisons, deux méthodes ont été utilisées. La première se consacre aux supports matériels de ces compendia et cherche à replacer chacun des manuscrits conservés dans leur contexte d'élaboration et celui de leur réception. La seconde s'attache au contenu des textes qu'ils referment en tentant de différencier leur enjeu pratique de leur portée symbolique, afin d'éclairer leur usage éventuel leur attrait présumé. La thèse est ainsi parvenue à démontrer comment la noblesse s'appropria ces compendia. Ce phénomène, explicable par une certaine image de la noblesse qu'ils véhiculent, fait de ces compendia des témoins privilégiés de la transition de la société féodale vers l'état princier. Enfin, la thèse illustre d'une façon nouvelle le rôle singulier des hérauts d'armes à la fin du Moyen-Âge.

Die Kompendien der spätmittelalterlichen Herolde vereinen in sich eine erstaunliche Vielfalt von Texten. Sie handeln ebenso vom Heroldsamt selbst, wie von den verschiedenen Zeremonien der Ritterschaft und der Welt des Adels im Allgemeinen. Mögen sie auf den ersten Blick auch wie schlichte Handbücher zur Ausübung des Heroldsberufes erscheinen - tatsächlich stellen sie wahrhaftes « Kaleidoskop » der spätmittelalterlichen Adelswelt dar. Denn die Interessen und Pflichten der Herolde gingen weit über die Heraldik im eigentlichen Sinne hinaus: Sie fanden ebenso in der Diplomatie eine wichtige Rolle wie im höfischen Zeremoniell. Vor allem aber kam es ihnen zu, die Ehre des Adels er bewahren und zu verbreiten. Das Ziel der Studie ist es, diese vielversprechende Quellengruppe zu erschließen und eine erste Klassifikation wie v.a. eine erste Interpretation ihrer Inhalte anzubieten. Hierfür wird auf zwei wesentliche Methoden zurückgegriffen. Die erste widmet sich v.a. den erhaltenen Handschriften als solches und fragt nach dem Kontext der Entstehung und Rezeption der Kompilationen. Die zweite hingegen setzt sich mit den Inhalten der einzelnen darin enthaltenen Texte auseinander und versucht zwischen deren praktischem Wert und symbolischer Bedeutung zu unterscheiden, um so ihren eventuellen Gebrauch und ihre mögliche Attraktivität zu erhellen. Die Arbeit konnte dabei zeigen, wie sehr der Adel selbst sich für diese Kompilationen interessierte und deren Überlieferung an sich zog. Ein, Phänomen, welches sich vor allem durch das ganz eigene, besondere Adelsbild erklären läßt, welches die Heroldskompendien propagierten und sie damit zu herausragenden Zeugnissen des Übergangs von der alten Lehnsgesellschaft zum modernen Fürstenstaat macht. Die Arbeit demonstriert damit auf eine ganz neues Weise die besondere Rolle, welche den Herolde in den gesellschaftlichen Umbrüchen des ausgehenden Mittelalter zukam.

The hashtag #justsaying is one of Twitter’s global stock hashtags. The hashtag is nontopical and appears to fulfill a complex range of metapragmatic framing functions. In this paper, I shall look at Dutch-language tweets in which the hashtag is being used as a fully enregistered ‘translingual’ framing device, and I will attempt an analysis focused on the specific kinds of communicative actions it marks and organizes. I shall use the notion of formatting as the point of departure: hashtags, as part of an innovative online scripted register, can be seen as formatting devices that introduce, proleptically, a recognizable framing effect on the statement (the tweet), often as a reframing response to other statements giving keys for complex and multiple but equally formatted forms of uptake. The hashtag, thus, appears to have powerful interactional structuring effects in formatting specific lines of action.

Análisis de la adaptación del reportaje y el documental a la multimedialidad e interactividad que ofrece internet. Se desarrolla una metodología básica para su categorización y creación. El caso de estudio es el documental web “Honduras: en el reino del plomo”. Mediante encuestas y grupos de discusión, se indaga sobre su efectividad narrativa y satisfacción para el espectador. Tanto desde el punto de vista clasificatorio, como desde el punto de vista de la producción, lo esencial es discernir las funciones narrativas, comprobando que la satisfacción, en el caso estudiado, de los espectadores/receptores es limitada.

Probabilistic timed automata, a variant of timed automata extended with discrete probability distributions, is a specification formalism suitable for describing both nondeterministic and probabilistic aspects of real-time systems, and is amenable to model checking against probabilistic timed temporal logic properties. In the case of classical (non-probabilistic) timed automata, it has been shown that for a large class of real-time verification problems correctness can be established using an integer-time model, inducing a notion of digital clocks, as opposed to the standard dense model of time. Based on these results, we address the question of under what conditions digital clocks are sufficient for the performance analysis of probabilistic timed automata. We extend previous results concerning the integer-time semantics of an important subclass of probabilistic timed automata to consider the computation of expected costs or rewards. We illustrate this approach through the analysis of the dynamic configuration protocol for IPv4 link-local addresses.

With an innovative approach that combines material media history, media theory, and literary poetics, this book reconstructs the great German writer Theodor Fontane's creative process.
Petra McGillen follows Fontane into the engine room of his text production. Analyzing a wealth of unexplored archival evidence--which includes a collection of the author's 67 extant notebooks, along with an array of other "paper tools," such as cardboard boxes, envelopes, and slips--McGillen demonstrates how Fontane compiled his realist prose works. That is, he assembled them from premediated sources, literally with scissors and glue, in an extraordinarily inorganic and radically intertextual manner that turned "writing" into a process of ongoing remix. By exploring the far-reaching implications of Fontane's creative practices for our understanding of his authorship, originality, and poetics, this book opens up a completely new way to think about his works and, by extension, 19th-century literary realism.
This conceptualization of authors' notebooks as creative tools makes a substantial contribution to scholarship on the history of writing media in several disciplines, from German studies and literary studies to media history, and to our understanding of the relationship between mass media and literary creativity in the late 19th century.

Given a system design model consisting of (1) a set of application tasks whose executions may be required to meet mixed timing, precedence, and resource constraints, (2) a network of timed automata describing the task arrival patterns and (3) a preemptive or non-preemptive scheduling policy, Times will generate a scheduler, and calculate the worst case response times for the tasks. The design model may be further validated using a model checker e.g. UPPAAL and then compiled to executable C-code using the Times compiler. The article proposes a hermeneutic approach to the films of M. Night Shyamalan based on a study of the convergence of three parallel processes: the detailed use of planning and, most of all, the shotcountershot, and the dialectic between field and out of field, the open construction of otherness; and, lastly, the narrative motif of the dead person who returns. The director manages to link those three aspects with a detailed investigation into the possibilities of the fantastic genre in order to metaphorically approach the problems of contemporary society and a new involvement of the viewer in the suspension of disbelief required by fiction.

This paper presents a stochastic variant of Hennessy-Milner logic that is interpreted over (state-labeled) inhomogeneous continuous-time Markov chains (ICTMCs), i.e., Markov chains in which transition rates are functions over time t. For piecewise constant rate functions, the model-checking problem is shown to be reducible to finding the zeros of an exponential polynomial. Using Sturm sequences and Newton’s method, we obtain an approximative model-checking algorithm which is linear in the size of the ICTMC, logarithmic in the number of bits precision, and exponential in the nesting depth of the formula.

The main contribution of the paper consists in showing that the BMC method is feasible for ACTL * (the universal fragment of CTL * which subsumes both ACTL and LTL. The extension to ACTL * is obtained by redefining the function returning the sufficient number of executions over which an ACTL * formula is checked, and then by combining two known translations to SAT for ACTL  and LTL formulas. The proposed translation of ACTL * formulas is essentially different from the existing translations of both ACTL and LTL formulas. Moreover, ACTL * seems to be the largest set of temporal properties which can be verified by means of BMC. We have implemented our new BMC algorithm for discrete timed automata and we have presented a preliminary experimental results, which prove the efficiency of the method. The formal treatment is the basis for the implementation of the technique in the symbolic model checker $\surd$ erics.

Probabilistic timed automata, a variant of timed automata extended with discrete probability distributions, is a modelling formalism suitable for describing formally both nondeterministic and probabilistic aspects of real-time systems, and is amenable to model checking against probabilistic timed temporal logic properties. However, the previously developed verification algorithms either suffer from high complexity, give only approximate results, or are restricted to a limited class of properties. In the case of classical (non-probabilistic) timed automata it has been shown that for a large class of real-time verification problems correctness can be established using an integral model of time (digital clocks) as opposed to a dense model of time. Based on these results we address the question of under what conditions digital clocks are sufficient for the performance analysis of probabilistic timed automata and show that this reduction is possible for an important class of systems and properties including probabilistic reachability and expected reachability. We demonstrate the utility of this approach by applying the method to the performance analysis of three probabilistic real-time protocols: the dynamic configuration protocol for IPv4 link-local addresses, the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network protocol and the IEEE 1394 FireWire root contention protocol.

Apesar do valor simbólico que os formatos de maiores dimensões representam para as edições dos jornais em papel, as questões pragmáticas relacionadas com a compactação dos seus tamanhos, a que se juntam agora as preocupações ambientais, devem levar a uma reflexão mais profunda sobre o futuro a curto prazo das formas gráficas dos jornais. Se a passagem dos formatos broadsheet e nórdicos para o berlinês ou para o tablóide pode, de um modo geral, ser considerada bem sucedida, a redução para formatos ainda menores, próximos do A4, fará igualmente sentido por diversas razões práticas e também ambientais.

Despite the symbolic value that larger newspaper formats represent, the pragmatic issues related to the compression of their sizes, to which we now must add environmental concerns, should lead to a deeper reflection on the short-term future of newspaper graphical forms. Regardless of whether the change from broadsheet and nordic formats to berliner or tabloid can generally be considered successful, the reduction to even smaller formats, close to A4, will also make sense for several practical, as well as environmental reasons.

Scholars who deal with scrolls and codices regularly are confronted by an apparently vast and indiscriminate range of scripts, formats, and sizes found among these documents. Indeed, Gallo somewhat wistfully comments upon the diversity of the types of Graeco-Roman Egyptian documents and how even the same class of document will vary according to the time period -- even though the ancient legalese is quite formulaic in character as well as rather rigid and limited as to types of format permitted. Recently it has been noted that provincial government documents are normally, to quote Worp, "impressively large." Worp places a document from Kellis as issued from the office of the Governor at Thebes because of its size. Over the past thirty-five years, researchers in a number of areas have found that the script, format, and size of a given text holds meaning beyond that of the written word. It is this meaning beyond words that we are examining here, the significance of the size of a document within the Imperial Administration.

The relationship of the size of a document to its content is as rigid as the formats and formulaic language. Size is dependent upon the social status of the originator, the characteristics of a local pattern, and the content.
