Odessa

The article examines the interwar period in the life and work of two architects, Usher Chiter (1899–1967) and Elyukim Maltz (1898–1973), both graduates of the Odessa School of Architecture.During that time the architects were doing work for the Mendele Moicher Sforim All-Ukrainian Museum of Jewish Proletarian Culture in Odessa. Based on documents and visual materials from a number of museums and archives located in Ukraine, Russia and Israel, as well as on private collections (including those of families of architects from Moscow, where Chiter and Maltz moved in the late 1920s),the author attempts to trace and reconstruct the two architects’ research expeditions across the former Pale of Jewish Settlement. A total of seven field trips were conducted in Podolia and the Soviet part of Volhynia – with the aim of collecting materials and exhibition items for the museum and of making nature drawings and watercolors showing Jewish sites, such as synagogues, cemeteries and residential buildings. This empirical approach exemplifies the method of preserving and representing disintegrating Jewish shtetls, commonly practised during the interwar period. The work of both architects is viewed through the prism of musealization of Jewish heritage in the early Soviet period which was closely connected to the formation of state ideology and its transition from «building of the national identity» to class paradigm and atheistic upbringing.

Résumé

C’est à Odessa, ville neuve au bord de la mer Noire, que fut fondée en septembre 1814 la célèbre Société des Amis (Philiki Eteria), qui fut à l’origine du mouvement grec de libération qui mena à la Guerre d’indépendance et à la constitution de l’Etat grec moderne. Et pourtant, si l’on excepte quelques tentatives récentes de la part d’historiens grecs (notamment Papoulidis, Prousis) et russes (Arsh) de resituer le mouvement de la Philiki Eteria, sa genèse recèle encore bien des points d’ombre. Cette communication, basée sur de multiples documents inédits tirés des archives russes et ukrainiennes (notamment sur la correspondance politique de Ioannis Capodistrias et Alexandre Stourdza), jette un nouveau regard  sur les origines de la Philiki Heteria, ses conceptions initiales, ses financements, ainsi que ses relations contrastées avec les autorités russes.

Elle s’interroge en particulier sur le cadre d’Odessa comme berceau de cette société secrète. Pourquoi est-ce dans cette ville portuaire, si loin des frontières de la Grèce continentale, qu'a pu se développer cette société secrète, et pourquoi son action a-t-elle eu des retombées si importantes ? Qu’y faisaient ses membres et comment s’étaient-ils connus ? Par reflet, nous examinerons les traces que cette organisation a laissées dans la mémoire et le patrimoine culturel de la ville d’Odessa.

Plus généralement, l’action de la Philiki Eteria à Odessa s’inscrit dans la vaste question d’Orient, un enjeu de la géopolitique russe auquel le sort de la Grèce fut intimement lié. C’est l’occasion d’examiner dans quelle mesure ce mouvement fut une cause passionnelle chez les haut fonctionnaires et les diplomates russes, ou au contraire l’instrument d’un Etat décidé à imposer son hégémonie sur les Détroits et en Méditerranée orientale, au détriment de l’Empire ottoman et des autres puissances européennes.

Дослідження пов'язане з аналізом епістоляріїв, що зберігаються в архіві М. Комарова у Відділі рідкісних видань і рукописів Одеської національної наукової бібліотеки. Метою роботи є з'ясування цінності цих листів для шевченкознавства, визначення основних тем, що стосуються постаті Т. Шевченка, кола діячів, які писали до Михайла Комарова на подібну тематику, та місця самого М. Комарова у збереженні пам'яті та вшануванні Кобзаря. Методологія дослідження базується на принципах історизму, об'єктивності, а також на загальноісторичних методах – хронологічному, ретроспективному, проблемнотематичному та статистично-аналітичному. Наукова новизна роботи полягає у здійсненні огляду шевченкознавчих сюжетів, присутніх у неопублікованих листах до М. Комарова. Визначено, які з матеріалів становлять наукову цінність та можуть залучатися до подальших досліджень. З'ясовано коло осіб, які писали до одеського діяча на шевченківську тематику та з якою метою. Відзначено факти, що свідчать про провідну роль М. Комарова в розвитку шевченкознавчих студій кінця ХІХ – початку ХХ ст. Висновки. У збережених до сьогодні листах, надісланих до М. Комарова, наведено багато різноманітних фактів, які прямо чи опосередковано пов'язані із шевченкознавством. Найбільшу цінність вони становлять для історії вшанування постаті Т. Шевченка в різних регіонах України та Санкт-Петербурзі, також – для історії складання бібліографії Т. Шевченка. Листи певною мірою доповнюють відомості про видання творів Кобзаря. Факти з життя видатного поета, які на момент написання листів були маловідомими, сьогодні вже є добре сприйнятими в шевченкознавчих студіях. Важливим аспектом листів до Михайла Комарова є визнання сучасниками його значення у формуванні й накопиченні знань про Кобзаря, про що зустрічаються згадки в листах від Ц. Білиловського, В. Леонтовича, Є. Чикаленка та інших, а Б. Грінченко навіть спрямовував зацікавлених, як у випадку з І. Бєлоусовим, до М. Комарова по шевченкознавчі консультації

The activity of the special SS-Unit "R" (Russia) in Transnistria is documented and analyzed on the basis of documents from the "Bundesarchiv" in Berlin-Lichterfelde. There is also indirect proof of the Holocaust and corresponding measures taken by this SS-unit.

These are mommories concerning my grandmother - Maria Przyłuska, who had a very interesting life. She was Polish, but born in Odessa in 1904. After her mother had died, she went with her father and sister to Manchuria, but after some time was sent to school of  "well born girls "in St Petersburg. In the meantime her father died (officially disappeared) during the First World War, so she stayed alone in Petersburg during the Revolusion in Russia. Finally she managed to escape to Poland at age 14 where her uncles and aunts lived in Łomianki (by Warsaw).

18. Yüzyıl Osmanlı Devleti açısından bir önceki yüzyıldan getirdiği ağır anlaşmanın etkileri ile başlamıştır. Ancak yüzyılın ilk başlarında toparlanma belirtileri göstermiş olsa da 1768-1774 Osmanlı Rus savaşı ile artık eski gücünden çok uzakta olduğu kanıtlanmıştır. Hem denizde hem karada Rus ordularının üstünlüğü Osmanlı Devleti’ne Küçük Kaynarca Antlaşması’nın imzalanmasını zorunlu kılmıştır. Bu savaş başlamadan önce Hocabey Kalesi ve Limanı onarımdan geçmiş, Osmanlı Devleti için önemli bir ticari merkez ve askeri karakol vaziyeti görmüştür. Bu tezde Hocabey Kalesi ve Limanı’nın kuruluşundan Küçük Kaynarca Antlaşması’na kadar ki süreç ele alınmıştır.

Одеса була якісно представлена в одній із складових політичної фази націєтворення – літературному рухові. Це стало однією з причин кількаразового відвідання видатною поетесою південного міста. Дослідженням візитів Лесі Українки та популяризацію інформації про її перебування в Одесі займався співробітник місцевої національної наукової бібліотеки та заслужений діяч мистецтв Зленко Григорій Дем’янович (1934-2015). Завданням даної розвідки є з’ясування його внеску в дослідження взаємозв’язків Лесі Українки та родини Косачів з українською громадою Одеси та популяризацію даного питання.

"'The prehistory of the Gypsies ends, and their history begins, at the beginnings of the fourteenth century'" (Vaux de Foletier, quoted in Liegeois 1986:38). Gypsy prehistory is--in a word--uninformative. As for the Gypsy historical period, it begins quite suddenly in the chronicles of late 14th-century medieval European towns and cities. These chronicles report widely on the first arrivals of Gypsy itinerant bands, whose leaders professed to be Christian kings, dukes, and earls of a kingdom in the East, which they called "Little Egypt" (Hancock 1980). They claimed to have been driven from their Christian land by infidels, meaning the Islamic Turks. Apparently, these claims went undisputed, which indicates that Gypsy leaders were very convincing representatives of their people… . Walter Starkie called this kind of early diplomatic encounter between Gypsy chiefs and Western European leaders--a recurring event then--a most clever hoax on the part of the Gypsies (Quintana 1972:14); but we should recognize it in a positive light for what it actually was--a pattern of successful Gypsy diplomacy.

José Pascual Domingo de Ribas y Boyons, almirante de la Armada Imperial rusa y fundador de la ciudad ucraniana de Odesa, nació en Nápoles en una fecha indeterminada, entre los años 1749 y 1754. Fue hijo del barcelonés Miguel de Ribas y Bouyens, mariscal y director del Ministerio de Fuerzas Navales y Armadas del Reino de Nápoles tras la reconquista del mismo por las tropas de Felipe V en 1735, y de la irlandesa Margaret Plunkett. Tras trasladarse al Imperio Ruso e ingresar en su ejército, participó en las guerras ruso-turcas y en la conquista de Crimea, recibiendo la orden de Catalina la Grande de fundar Odesa. Vicealmirante del Imperio, recibió numerosas condecoraciones y reconocimientos,  y ha dado su nombre a la avenida principal de la actual ciudad ucraniana.

"Réactualisée par le récent débat sur l'adhésion de la Turquie à l'Union européenne et par la crise ukrainienne, la question des confins de l'Europe apparaît de manière contrastée dans le cas d'une ville comme Odessa. Dès son origine, elle a été conçue comme une ville libre et ouverte tout en servant de capitale à la Nouvelle Russie. Construite à l'européenne par des architectes français, elle a vu d'emblée s'installer différentes communautés nationales, et Pouchkine a pu dire à juste titre qu'on y «respire l'Europe».

Néanmoins, Odessa reste d'un point de vue géographique «doublement périphérique» par rapport à la Russie et à l'Europe. Tout au long du XIXe siècle, on y «exile» les intellectuels exclus des capitales de l'Empire des tsars. La ville prospère, mais de Paris, Londres ou Berlin, elle paraît en marge de l'Europe urbaine et culturelle. En 1847, Balzac ne vit lui-même «de la frontière européenne à Odessa qu'un même champ de la Beauce». Le triomphe de la révolution bolchevique introduira une véritable coupure dans l'histoire de la ville et de ses relations avec l'Europe.

Par un jeu de miroirs, le cas d'une ville-carrefour comme Odessa, lieu emblématique d'une Europe multiculturelle et multinationale, dit quelque chose du sens multiple de l'Europe, témoigne de ses déchirements et de ses conflits intérieurs. Elle permet aussi de mieux cerner les contenus de la civilisation européenne et de préciser les contours du Vieux Continent."

After the end of the Crimean War, politicians, engineers, and economists alike debated the future of the port of Odessa. Two particular issues that relate to the rising age of steam emerged: Odessa was forced to adapt its port infrastructures to bulky steamships and the city questioned its place in the developing railway network of Imperial Russia. This contribution argues that by balancing economic and military (geostrategic) demands, ministry officials and engineers laid the foundation both for Odessa's success in the 1860s and 1870s and its failures in the 1880s and 1890s.

Wallachia and Moldavia, which occupied an important position in the Balkans and Eastern European region, came under the Ottoman rule at the end of the 15th century. The region, which was important for the Ottoman Empire in terms of political and strategic as well as economic, subsistence and logistics, was included in the Ottoman cartography and geography books from the early years of the Empire. In this sense, especially important settlements from Ochakov to Varna, the West Black Sea Coast, along the Danube Basin and the Dniester River are seen as remarkable regions in the drawn Ottoman maps and written geographical books in the 15-17th centuries. This article, while examining how and to what extent the Wallachia and Moldavia region had a place in Ottoman geographical manuscripts, at some points, comparisons were made with European geographical atlases of theperiod. Similarly, in the article, evaluations are made on the books of the leading Ottoman geographers such as Piri Reis, Ali Macar Reis, Katib Çelebi, Ebubekir Dımeşki and some anonymous Ottoman geographical manuscripts.

Two bulgarian icons to Bishop Neophis from Ruschuk in Bessarabia (1822-1827)
In this article based on the archives stored in the National Archives of the Republic of Moldova, are details about the two bulgarian icons caught in Bessarabia in the first half of the XIX century. Sources reveal that the icons were painted in the city of Veliko Tarnovo, after which they were presented to Metropolitan Daniel. After the death of the last relics was inherited by his nephew, Bishop Neophit, who immigrated to Bessarabia, he took them with him. When the bishop died, then somehow the icons appeared water droplets, which in the opinion of the owner of the new Christopher Genadiyu Apostolov, spoke of divine intervention. In order to avoid causing any superstitions of the people took the case under his personal control of Chisinau and Khotinsk Archbishop Demetrios. In the course of examination of icons has been found that they do not chirsm and drops them were randomly. Probably due to the fact that on the day of St. George, the owner of the tradition sprayed the room, so the water and got on the icon.

M. Naydorf. Odessa. City's Main Street
The article deals with the concept of Main or Central Street in typical New Time city by the example of Deribasovskaya St. in Odessa (Ukraine) .
The concept of Central Street is considered from the point of correlation between its function and structure in three aspects: topographic, institutional and symbolic. It is demonstrated that different aspects of City's Central Street are interrelated. The article traces the historical tranformation of main street functions in the era of modern mass culture. At the same time it is observed that under new conditions classic Central Street functions are being transferred to a more extensive city center.
The research is mainly based on literary descriptions of Odessa in works by V. Zhabotinsky, I. Babel, Y. Yaroshevsky, B. Yarmolinetz, folklore sources and the author's personal observations.

1815. Après vingt années d'expansion révolutionnaire et napoléonienne, l'heure est à la réaction. La Russie, qui a été menacée dans son existence même, émerge comme pilier du nouvel ordre politique européen. Pour assurer celui-ci, et sceller la paix enfin retrouvée, le tsar Alexandre Ier propose une Sainte-Alliance des souverains et des peuples chrétiens. Il charge son conseiller Alexandre Stourdza (1791-1854) de mettre en forme cette surprenante proclamation politico-mystique bientôt ratifiée par tous les pays du continent. Après le fracas des armes, le destin de l'Europe se joue désormais dans les chancelleries, dans la presse et dans l'opinion. Face à l'héritage des Lumières, les partisans d'un retour à la tradition sont pourtant divisés: mystiques et théocrates d'un côté, conservateurs plus laïcs de l'autre, catholiques ou orthodoxes, Russes ou Français. Chaque parti, chaque puissance du moment, a en fait sa propre vision du nouvel ordre qui doit régir l'Europe. Défendue par Stourdza de congrès en congrès, la Sainte-Alliance sera bientôt mise en échec par les libéraux allemands, et débordée par le système répressif de Metternich.

Abandonné par son souverain, Alexandre Stourdza quitte le service diplomatique en 1822 pour s'établir à Odessa. Il mettra désormais sa plume au service d'une orthodoxie rénovée, qui soit capable de fédérer les différentes populations chrétiennes de Russie et de l'Empire ottoman. Loin de se réduire à un combat d'arrière-garde, ce grand projet de «modernisation défensive» des sociétés orthodoxes incluait l'émancipation nationale des Grecs et des Roumains, ainsi que l'abolition du servage en Russie.

Formée d'abord à Saint-Pétersbourg, Stella Ghervas est docteur en histoire de l'Université de Bucarest et docteur ès lettres de l'Université de Genève. Ses travaux portent notamment sur les mouvements culturels et politiques de l'Europe de l'Est (Russie, Balkans) au XIXe siècle et sur les échanges intellectuels avec l'Occident. Elle est actuellement chargée de recherche à l'Institut universitaire de hautes études internationales de Genève.

Author defines questions regarding implementation of genius loci specification ethics in post-colonial interpretation of cultural heritage of South of Ukraine. Highly ambitious exhibition “Warszawa ― Moskwa / Москва ― Варшава 1900-2000” was taken as an example of studies research. Current studies revealed 10-15%  genius loci specification of cultural heritage of South of Ukraine of 254 artists whose artworks were exhibited in Warsaw and Moscow in 2004-2005. Author refers commercial arguments and states current negative impacts on related infrastructure of creative economy and knowledge economy of South of Ukraine.
Paper was written for III International Scientific and Practical Conference "The South of Ukraine in the Patriotic and European history" catalog and conference itself held September 15-16, 2016 in Odessa in Ukraine.

The article examines the development of Tel Aviv’s seaside in its formative years. The proximity to the sea aroused in the predominately-European founders’ aspirations of creating a seaside resort town, inspired by European models familiar to them. Four models of inspiration for the emerging city and the role they played in Tel Aviv’s early urban and architectural plans will be discussed: (1) Odessa on the Black Sea; (2) English seaside resorts: Brighton; (3) Nice on the French Riviera; (4) German health spas: Baden Baden

The novel "Pyatero" ("The Five") by Vladimir Jabotinsky reflects cultural transformations of the city Odessa at the beginning of the 20th century and the mythologized destinies of one assimilated Jewish family. This paper analyses the function of myths from Ovid's Metamorphoses in Jabotinsky's novel.

АНОТАЦІЯ
У статті на базі опублікованих спогадів та рукописних архівних матеріалів висвітлено нові факти з біографії української мемуаристки, педагога, краєзнавця та біографіста Софії Єгунової Щербини (1860-1940-ві рр.). З’ясовано її освітній шлях на історико-філологічному відділі Київських вищих жіночих курсів та визначено місце її праці після завершення курсів – у жіночій гімназії В. Ващенко-Захарченко. Окрему увагу приділено її психологічним рисам: з’ясовано її організаторські і моральні якості, що втілилися у педагогічній роботі. Також з’ясовано відповідальність діячки у наукових дослідженнях. Це вдалося простежити на її критичних зауваженнях до складання Біографічного словника діячів України.  Крім того, базуючись на її спогадах, стало можливим з’ясувати деякі моменти суспільно-політичних поглядів. Також визначено місце проживання родини Щербин в Одесі.

В статье на базе опубликованных воспоминаний и рукописных архивных материалов освещены новые факты из биографии украинской мемуаристки, педагога, краеведа и биографиста Софии Егуновой-Щербины (1860-1940-е гг.). Выяснено ее образовательный путь на историко-филологическом отделе Киевских высших женских курсов и определено место ее работы после завершения курсов – в женской гимназии В. Ващенко-Захарченко. Особое внимание уделено ее психологическим характеристикам: выяснено ее организаторские и моральные качества, которые воплотились в педагогической работе. Также выяснено ответственность деятеля в научных исследованиях. Это удалось проследить на ее критических замечаниях к составлению биографического словаря деятелей Украины. Кроме того, основываясь на ее воспоминаниях, стало возможным выяснить некоторые моменты общественно-политических взглядов. Также определено место проживания семьи Щербин в Одессе.

ABSTRACT
In the article, based on published memoirs and manuscript archival materials, new facts from the biography of the Ukrainian memoirist, teacher, historian and biographer Sofia Egunova-Scherbina (1860-1940-ies) were highlighted. Her educational path on the historical-philological department of the Kyiv higher women's courses is determined and the place of her work is determined after completion of the courses – in the women's V.Vashchenko-Zakharchenko gymnasium. Particular attention is paid to her psychological features: its organizational and moral qualities, embodied in pedagogical work, have been clarified. In particular, a very significant fact is the organization of teachers of the gymnasium by Sophia Nikolaevna, which contributed to the revival and formation of the famous gymnasium O.Duchinska.
It also clarifies the responsibility of activists in scientific research. It was succeeded to trace her critical remarks to the compilation of the Biographical Dictionary of Ukrainian figures. In addition, based on her memoirs, it became possible to find out some moments of her socio-political views. The role of S. Egunova-Shcherbina in contributing to the construction of the quarry of her husband's brother Aleksandr Shcherbina, son-in-law Ivan Faas and husband Konstantin Shcherbina were noted, all of which were professors of universities. The place of residence of the Shcherbina family in Odessa is also determined.
