Using matching and regression analyses, we measure the difference in citations between articles posted to Academia.edu and other articles from similar journals, controlling for field, impact factor, and other variables. Based on a sample size of 31,216 papers, we find that a paper in a median impact factor journal uploaded to Academia.edu receives 16% more citations after one year than a similar article not available online, 51% more citations after three years, and 69% after five years. We also found that articles also posted to Academia.edu had 58% more citations than articles only posted to other online venues, such as personal and departmental home pages, after five years.

What are the leading tools and archives in digital cultural heritage? How can they be integrated into research infrastructures to better serve their intended audiences? In this book, authors from a wide range of countries, representing some of the best research projects in digital humanities related to cultural heritage, discuss their latest findings, both in terms of new tools and archives, and how they are used (or not used) by both specialists and by the general public. African scholarly research is relatively invisible globally because, even though research production on the continent is growing in absolute terms, it is falling in comparative terms. In addition, traditional metrics of visibility, such as the Impact Factor, fail to make legible all African scholarly production. And many African universities also do not take a strategic approach to scholarly communication to broaden the reach of their scholars’ work.

To address this challenge, the Scholarly Communication in Africa Programme (SCAP) was established to help raise the visibility of African scholarship by mapping current research and communication practices in Southern African universities and by recommending and piloting technical and administrative innovations based on open access dissemination principles. To do this, SCAP conducted extensive research in four faculties at the Universities of Botswana, Cape Town, Mauritius and Namibia.

In the University of Namibia’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, SCAP found that scholars:
• carry heavy teaching and administrative loads which hinder their research productivity
• remain unconvinced by open access dissemination
• find it easier to collaborate with scholars in the global North than in the rest of Africa
• rarely communicate their research with government
• engage in small, locally-based research projects that are either unfunded or funded by the university
• produce outputs that are often interpretive, derivative or applied due, in part, to institutional rewards structures and funding challenges
• do not utilise social media technologies to disseminate their work or seek new collaborative opportunities.

All of these factors impact UNAM’s research in/visibility at a time when scholarly communication is going through dramatic technical, legal, social and ethical changes.

“Scholarly Communication at the University of Namibia” shares the results of SCAP’s research and advocacy efforts at UNAM’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. It not only analyses the faculty’s scholarly communication ecosystem, but illuminates the opportunities available for raising the visibility of its scholarship. It concludes with a series of recommendations that would enhance the communicative and developmental potential of the university’s research as a whole.

This study will be of interest for scholars of African higher education, academically linked civil society organisations, educationally affiliated government personnel and university researchers and managers.

A evolução da tecnologia da informação e a sua inserção na Arquivologia proporcionou rupturas no conceito e na concepção de documento arquivístico que se refletem nas práticas de gestão, preservação e acesso. A complexidade e a especificidade do documento arquivístico digital implica na necessidade de um tratamento diferenciado se comparado aos documentos tradicionais em suportes analógicos. Além disto, é preciso garantir a integridade e a autenticidade dos documentos digitais armazenando-os em um sistema confiável. Neste sentido, os repositórios digitais se configuram no âmbito global como a melhor alternativa para a preservação em longo prazo, entretanto, as ações para gerar confiabilidade ainda são pouco difundidas. Este artigo tem por objetivo realizar uma reflexão sobre os requisitos para desenvolver um repositório digital confiável. A metodologia utilizada consiste na revisão de materiais previamente publicados nos últimos vinte anos, a qual aborda os dados de forma qualitativa, enfatizando os estudos mais recentes. Dentre os avanços mais significativos, salienta-se a realização de auditorias para que os repositórios possam ser certificados como “confiáveis”. Além disso, é reforçada a utilização de normas e recomendações, e a definição prévia de políticas de preservação digital que considerem a confiabilidade durante todo o ciclo documental, configurando assim uma custódia confiável.

TRUSTED DIGITAL REPOSITORIES FOR DIGITAL ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS: considerations on the preservation in long-term

Abstract: The evolution of information technology and its insertion in the Archival science provided breaks in the concept and design of archival document that are reflected in practices of management, preservation and access. The complexity and specificity of the digital archival document implies the need for different treatment compared to traditional documents on analog media. In addition, we must ensure the integrity and authenticity of digital documents by storing them in a trusted system. In this sense, digital repositories are configured globally as the best alternative to preserve in long-term, however, the actions to generate trustworthy are poorly distributed. This article aims to make a reflection on the requirements for developing a trusted digital repository. The methodology used is to review of materials previously published in the last twenty years, which approaches the data qualitatively, emphasizing the most recent studies. Among the most significant advances, highlight the audits for the repositories can be certified as "trusted". Furthermore, is enhanced the use of standards and recommendations, and the prior definition of digital preservation policies that consider the trustworthy throughout the documentary cycle, thus creating a trust custody.

Resumo: Este estudo descreve e avalia a possibilidade de dois ou mais repositórios arquivísticos manterem níveis de interoperabilidade, de modo que são abordados os arquivos independentes, os cooperados, os federados e os de entidades funcionais compartilhadas. Para tanto, parte-se do levantamento bibliográfico de materiais previamente publicados, por meio da seleção de livros, publicações técnicas e artigos científicos. A interoperabilidade é o prisma da discussão, e os repositórios arquivísticos digitais confiáveis correspondem a categoria norteadora. Dessa forma, os dados são analisados de forma qualitativa e discutidos conforme a lógica dedutiva a fim de caracterizar-se como um artigo de revisão assistemática. Observa-se que a interoperabilidade entre repositórios arquivísticos acarreta benefícios às comunidades de preservação digital que comportam a economia de recursos, a otimização da busca de informações e o desenvolvimento de padrões. Por fim, este estudo esclarece conceitos e possíveis cenários de interoperabilidade para repositórios arquivísticos, além de trazer uma visão pós-custodial que realça a importância da custódia tendo em vista as perspectivas de sucessão.

INTEROPERABILITY BETWEEN TRUSTWORTHY DIGITAL ARCHIVAL REPOSITORIES

This study describes and evaluates the possibility of two or more archival repositories maintaining levels of interoperability, so that independent, cooperative, federated, and shared functional entities archives are addressed. In order to do so, it is based on the bibliographical survey of previously published materials, through the selection of books, technical publications and scientific articles. Interoperability is the prism of the discussion, and reliable digital archival repositories correspond to the guiding category. Thus, the data are analyzed qualitatively and discussed according to the deductive logic in order to be characterized as an article of no systematic review. It is observed that the interoperability between archival repositories brings benefits to the digital preservation communities that entail the saving of resources, the optimization of information search and the development of standards. Finally, this study clarifies concepts and possible interoperability scenarios for archival repositories, as well as providing a post-custodial view that highlights the importance of custody in view of succession perspectives.

Desde su creación en 1989, uno de los objetivos fundamentales del Instituto Andaluz del Patrimonio Histórico ha sido poner la información del patrimonio cultural generada por las administraciones públicas al servicio de la ciudadanía. La difusión de esta información a través de la Guía Digital del Patrimonio Cultural de Andalucía ayuda a conocer y, por lo tanto, valorar el patrimonio cultural con carácter general pero también permite, a partir de los datos que ofrece, apoyar investigaciones que generan nuevo conocimiento. Como resultado de un análisis bibliográfico y de otros los parámetros de uso de la información, se ofrece en este trabajo una aproximación a su valoración por parte de distintos colectivos profesionales y de la ciudadanía en general. / Since its creation in 1989, one of the main aims of the Andalusian Institute for Historical Heritage has been to disseminate among the citizenship the cultural heritage information created by the public administration The dissemination on this information through the Digital Guide to the Andalusian Cultural Heritage contributes to a general awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage while at the same time provides support to research that, in turn, creates new knowledge. Resulting from a bibliographic analysis and the analysis of information usage parameters, this paper present a general approach to how both professional bodies and the citizenship at large value this information.

Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo é analisar o modelo lógico da informação proposto pelo Open Archival Information System (OAIS), e identificar as suas convergências com a Arquivística. Verifica-se a estrutura do pacote de informação para avaliar a sua capacidade de preservar documentos arquivísticos digitais autênticos em longo prazo. A metodologia utilizada parte do levantamento bibliográfico de materiais previamente publicados. Os dados coletados são analisados de forma qualitativa e a discussão segue a lógica dedutiva. Assim, tem-se um artigo de revisão assistemática, que proporciona uma reflexão sobre o tema e salienta o ponto de vista dos autores. Nas conclusões, observa-se que o pacote de informação para arquivamento comporta questões pertinentes à Arquivística, como, por exemplo, garantia de autenticidade, manutenção da proveniência, organicidade, e histórico de custódia. Portanto, reafirma-se a necessidade da implementação de repositórios arquivísticos digitais confiáveis em conformidade com o OAIS.

LOGICAL MODEL OF INFORMATION IN OPEN ARCHIVAL INFORMATION SYSTEM: AN ARCHIVAL REFLECTION ON THE ARCHIVAL INFORMATION PACKAGE

Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze the logical information model proposed by the Open Archival Information System (OAIS), and to identify its convergences with Archival science. Check the structure of the information packet to evaluate its ability to preserve authentic long-term digital archival records. The methodology used is part of a bibliographical survey of previously published materials. The data collected are qualitatively analyzed and the discussion follows the deductive logic. Thus, there is an article of no systematic review, which provides a reflection on the theme and highlights the authors' point of view. In the conclusions, it is observed that the archival information package includes issues pertinent to Archival science, such as guarantee of authenticity, preservation of provenance, organicity, and custody history. Therefore, it is reaffirmed the need to implement reliable digital archival repositories in accordance with OAIS.

A constante produção de documentos digitais no âmbito da Arquivística ocasionou um processo de revisão teórico-prático. Como consequência, além de custodiar documentos analógicos, os arquivos passaram também, a custodiar documentos digitais. No entanto a sua preservação é dotada de complexidades tecnológicas e especificidades arquivísticas, e para sanar tais necessidades, tem-se discutido a implementação de políticas, estratégias e repositórios digitais em conformidade com o modelo Open Archival Information System (OAIS). Para fins deste estudo, aborda-se o modelo lógico da informação arquivada, proposto pelo OAIS, com o objetivo de identificar e apontar convergências com a Arquivística. A metodologia consiste no levantamento bibliográfico composto por livros, publicações técnicas e artigos científicos, caracteriza-se assim, como um artigo de revisão assistemática. Como resultado, observaram-se convergências entre a Arquivística e o modelo lógico da informação arquivada presente no OAIS em relação à organicidade, proveniência, custódia e acesso. Dentre os principais apontamentos, ressalta-se a pertinência do modelo lógico da informação arquivada, o qual proporciona confiabilidade aos documentos arquivísticos custodiados, e assim reforça a possibilidade de implementar repositórios arquivísticos digitais confiáveis, em conformidade com o OAIS.

LOGICAL MODEL OF ARCHIVED INFORMATION IN THE OPEN ARCHIVAL INFORMATION SYSTEM: AN ARCHIVAL SCIENCE REFLECTION

Abstract: the constant production of digital records within the archives gave rise to a process of theoretical-practical revision. As consequence, in addition to guarding analog records, the archives also passed, to guard digital records. However, its preservation is endowed with technological complexities and archival specificities, and to address such needs, we have discussed the implementation of policies, strategies and digital repositories in accordance with the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model. For the purposes of this study, is presented the logical model of archived information, proposed by the OAIS, with the aim of identifying and pointing out convergences with Archival science. The methodology consists of a bibliographical survey composed of books, technical publications and scientific articles, characterized as an article of no systematic review. As a result, we observed convergences between Archival science and the logical model of archived information present in OAIS in relation to organicity, provenance, custody and access. Among the main notation, the relevance of the logical model of archived information, which provides reliability to the archived records, is emphasized, and thus reinforces the possibility of reliable digital archival repositories in accordance with OAIS.

Plan S is a an initiative that aims at ‘opening up’ access to scientific knowledge by ensuring immediate and cost-free (for the reader) access to scientific knowledge under specified Open Access  (OA)  principles.  While  the  initiative  is  guided  by  evidently  good  intentions  to overcome  current  obstacles  that  restrict  the  quick  publication,  dissemination  and reproduction  of  scientific  research,  it  is  not  only  informed  primarily  by  a  natural  sciences perspective,  neglecting  the  humanities  and  social  sciences,  but  also  it  does  not  appear  to consider  or  address  the  more  profound  structural  inequalities  in  knowledge  production across  the  world.  The  essay  aims  to  problematise  some  of  these  less  often  pronounced asymmetries in an effort to shift the attentionof OA advocates to more urgent issues and to evidence the necessity for more subversive remedial strategies.

Resumo Este estudo contextualiza os requisitos da infraestrutura de segurança para gestão de riscos, preconizados pela ISO 16363, no âmbito da Arquivística. São perpassadas questões como: monitoramento das plataformas de hardware/software e suportes; políticas de backup; alterações de segurança em pontos críticos do sistema; gerenciamento de riscos; e plano de recuperação para desastres. A discussão segue a lógica dedutiva, realizando uma triangulação na qual a infraestrutura de segurança da ISO 16363 é o prisma da discussão, e o Repositório Arquivístico Digital Confiável é a categoria norteadora. Dessa forma, obtém-se um artigo de revisão assistemática com temática aberta, pautada nos referenciais da preservação digital. Por fim, observa-se a necessidade estabelecer uma preservação digital sistêmica, orientada às normas e padrões amplamente aceitos pela comunidade de preservação digital.

Abstract: this study contextualizes the requirements of security infrastructure for risk management, as recommended by ISO 16363, in the field of Archival science. Questions such as: monitoring of hardware/software platforms and supports; backup policies; security changes at critical points in the system; risk management; and recovery plan for disaster. The discussion follows deductive logic, performing a triangulation in which the security infrastructure of ISO 16363 is the prism of the discussion, and the Trusted Digital Archival Repository is the guiding category. Thus, we obtain an open-ended thematic review article, based on the references of digital preservation. Finally, there is a need to establish a systemic digital preservation, oriented to norms and standards widely accepted by the digital preservation community.

Objetivo. Este estudo realiza uma breve reflexão sobre a preservação de documentos arquivísticos digitais, destacando a relação entre as políticas institucionais, as estratégias de preservação digital, e os sistemas informatizados de gestão e preservação.

Método. Consiste no levantamento bibliográfico de materiais previamente publicados das áreas de Arquivologia e Ciência da informação, resultando em um artigo de revisão assistemática. As fontes consultadas consistem em livros, teses, textos em sites da internet e artigos científicos de periódicos indexados no Google Scholar, com um recorte temporal referente aos últimos vinte anos.

Resultados. A literatura pesquisada conduz a necessidade de se definir, previamente, as políticas de preservação digital, e após, implementaros sistemas informatizados para gestão e preservação, mantendo altos níveis de interoperabilidade. Além disto, salienta-se a questão de manter uma cadeia de custódia ininterrupta que contemple as três idades do ciclo de vida dos documentos.

Conclusões. Este estudo sintetiza aspectos de um sistema de preservação digital gerido basicamente em duas etapas distintas, porém interoperáveis. Desta forma, reforça as discussões sobre a cadeia de custódia documental e interoperabilidade entre as normas, os sistemas informatizados e os demais softwares utilizados no acervo.


Abstract
Objective. This study makes a brief reflection on the preservation of digital records, highlighting the relationship between institutional policies, digital preservation strategies, and computerized systems of management and preservation.

Method. It consists of the lifting of  bibliographic material previously published in the areas of Archival Science and Information Science, resulting in an unsystematic review article. Consulted sources consist of books, theses, texts on websites and scientific journal articles indexed in Google Scholar, with a time frame for the last twenty years.

Results. The literature leads to the need to define in advance the policies of digital preservation, and after, implementing computerized systems for management and preservation, maintaining high levels of interoperability. In addition, it is noted the issue of keeping an unbroken chain of custody covering the three ages of the document life cycle.

Conclusions. This study synthesizes aspects of a digital preservation system basically managed in two distinct stages, but interoperable. This reinforces the discussions on the chain of documentary custody and interoperability between standards, computerized systems and other software used in the collection.
