Des mouvements sociaux partout sur la planète se révoltent contre la démocratie libérale et le capitalisme tout en expérimentant des manières d'être, de penser et de faire basées sur l'autonomie, le respect de la diversité et l'aide mutuelle. Dans cet article, les pratiques politiques, culturelles et économiques du Centre social autogéré de Pointe-Saint-Charles déployées durant la lutte pour l'appropriation collective du Bâtiment 7 sont examinées à l'aune du concept d'autonomie collective. En rendant visible ces pratiques subversives, l'analyse permet de saisir la portée révolutionnaire de cette initiative libertaire située en marge de l'économie sociale au Québec.

Social movements throughout the world are rebelling against liberal democracy and capitalism, while at the same time experimenting ways of being, thinking and doing based on autonomy, respect of diversity and mutual aid. In this article, political, cultural and economic practices enacted by the Autonomous Social Center of Point St. Charles during the struggle to reclaim Building 7 are examined in light of the concept of collective autonomy. As these subversive practices are rendered visible, the revolutionary potential of this anti-authoritarian initiative situated on the margins of the social economy in Quebec emerges.

How does the relationship between business and profit affect social and ecological sustainability? Many sustainability scholars have identified competition for profit in the market as a key driver of social exploitation and environmental destruction. Yet, studies rarely question whether businesses and markets have to be profit-seeking. The widespread existence of not-for-profit forms of business, which approach profit as a means to achieving social benefit, suggests that there are other ways of organizing business and markets that might be more sustainable.

In this thesis, I use a critical institutional economics lens and systems thinking to synthesize existing theory and knowledge about how business, markets, and profit affect sustainability outcomes, in order to explain how alternative approaches to these institutions might produce different outcomes. The result is a new theory about how relationship-to-profit (the legal difference between for-profit and not-for-profit forms of business) plays a key role in the sustainability of an economy, due to the ways in which it guides and constrains actors’ behavior, and drives larger market dynamics.

In Paper 1, I develop a conceptual framework for understanding the tradeoffs and synergies between profit and social-ecological sustainability. I show how profit-seeking strategies can be examined to assess whether they derive profit from: efficiency gains; willing and informed contributions from social stakeholders; or exploitation of social or ecological stakeholders. These bounded sources of profit imply limits to profit. Therefore, in order for businesses and markets to be sustainable, they should treat profit as a means rather than an end in itself. In Paper 2, I explain that whether profit is treated as a means or an end manifests through both voluntary objectives (i.e., if a business explicitly pursues profit as a goal) and financial rights (i.e., the right or obligation to distribute profit to private owners).

Some forms of business encourage profit-as-an-end more than others. In Paper 3, I outline ideal types of for-profit and not-for-profit economies, and describe the expected dynamics of these systems based on the regulative aspects of relationship-to-profit. The legal purpose, ownership (i.e., private financial rights), and corresponding investment structures of for-profit forms of business all encourage firms to treat profit as an end. The pursuit of unlimited financial gain and the private distribution of the surplus by for-profit businesses tend to drive the growth of consumerism, environmental degradation, inequality, market concentration, and political capture. In a not-for-profit type of economy, businesses do not have a financial gain purpose or private financial rights. Profit in such a system is used as a means to achieve social benefit. This results in higher levels of equality and opens up the space for more effective sustainability interventions.

Yet, relationship-to-profit is only one dimension of business that is important for sustainability. In Paper 4, I develop a framework to structure analyses and wider discussions of post-growth business around five key dimensions of business: (1) relationship-to-profit, (2) incorporation structure, (3) governance, (4) strategy, and (5) size and geographical scope.

The theory developed in this thesis offers an explanation of how key institutional elements of business and markets drive social and ecological sustainability outcomes.

This article examines a series of near-future SF stories that offer snapshots of an immediate future dominated by the intensification of contemporary economic tendencies, including increased automation and the rise of digital platforms. Much twentieth century SF tends to traffic in a certain techno-optimism in its outlook, not so much to suggest that technological advances would produce positive outcomes but that they would continue to develop and expand in their complexity and productivity. Today this utopian legacy is carried forward both by literary science fiction studies and by the uses of science fiction within contemporary political theory. In a different vein, and in tension with this outlook, is what we call ‘science friction’: a literary practice of slowing down visions of technological and social progress.

History bears testament to the Manifesto's planetary circulation, global readership and material impact. Interpretations of this short document have affected the lives of millions globally, particularly in the second half of the twentieth century. The text is somehow able to outline the complex theoretical foundations for the world's most enduring critique of capitalism in a comprehensible and persuasive language, and as such, readers of all classes, professions, nations and ethnicities have drawn on-and in many cases warped and manipulated-its valuable insights. Whilst arguing for the importance of the Manifesto as an anti-imperial book and exploring the reasons for its viral circulation, this chapter will also show that it is a self-reflexive text that predicts its own historic impact. It is the formal and generic-or, in fact, 'literary'-qualities of this astonishing document that have given it such primacy in the canon of anti-imperial and anti-capitalist writing. A spectre is haunting Europe-the spectre of Communism.

Moveable Gardens explores how biodiversity and food can counter the alienation caused by displacement. By offering in-depth studies on a variety of regions, this volume carefully considers various forms of sanctuary-making within communities. This book seeks to address how carrying seeds, plants, and other travelling companions is an ongoing response to the grave conditions of displacement in today’s world. The destruction of homelands, fragmentation of habitats, and post-capitalist conditions of modernity are countered by the individuals in this volume through thoughtful remembrance of tradition and the migration of seeds, which are embodied in gardening, cooking, and community-building.
Moveable Gardens includes research located in distant yet connected places, where the authors examine how biodiversity fares in food, memory, and commensality. In highlighting itineraries and sanctuaries in an era of massive dislocation, this volume addresses concerns about finding comforting and familiar refuges in the Anthropocene. The worlds of marginalized individuals who live in impoverished rural communities, many Indigenous peoples, and refugees are constantly under threat of fracturing. Yet, in every case, there is resilience and regeneration as these individuals recreate their worlds through the foods, traditions, and plants they carry with them into their new realities.
This volume offers a new understanding of the performances and routines of sociality in the face of daunting market forces and perilous climate transformations. These traditions sustained our ancestors, and they may suffice to secure a more meaningful, diverse future. By delving into the nature of nostalgia, burrowing into memory and knowledge, and embracing the specific wonders of each deeply-rooted or newly displaced community, endlessly valuable ways of being and understanding can be preserved.

An analysis and critique of the well known Marx and Engels' Communist Manifesto, and a discussion of its applicability today on corporatist democratic America, and the possibility of this serving as a blueprint toward post-democratic/post-capitalist America.

The creation of a Neo-Capitalist economy should be understood as a quadrangular system composed of four interrelated parallel processes, mutually influencing one another: in the consumers’ market, it is the weakening of the relationship of expenditure and purchase, and the fragmentation of the product. In the labor market, we are witnessing the weakening of the relationship between labor and income on the one hand, and the fragmentation of labor on the other, whether through part-time jobs, temporary jobs, freelance, barter, and Universal Basic Income.

El -nuevo- modelo económico boliviano o Modelo Económico Social Comunitario Productivo (MESCP) es el modelo económico adoptado oficialmente por el Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia desde la promulgación de la NCPE en el 2009. Sus fundamentos microeconómicos no difieren de aquellos postulados en una economía liberal por lo que la economía boliviana da una continuidad al esquema de libre-intercambio, en particular no se cuestiona el principio utilitarista. En este ensayo se trata de mostrar que la inclusión del principio de la reciprocidad daría lugar a un modelo económico no-capitalista, mejor adaptado a las condiciones y necesidades del pueblo boliviano.

In this book, we outline a model of a non-capitalist market economy based on not-for-profit forms of business. This work presents both a critique of the current economic system and a vision of a more socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable economy. The point of departure is the purpose and profit-orientation embedded in the legal forms used by businesses (e.g., for-profit or not-for-profit) and the ramifications of this for global sustainability challenges such as environmental pollution, resource use, climate change, and economic inequality. We document the rapid rise of not-for-profit forms of business in the global economy and offer a conceptual framework and an analytical lens through which to view these relatively new economic actors and their potential for transforming the economy. The book explores how a market consisting of only or mostly not-for-profit forms of business might lead to better financial circulation, economic equality, social well-being, and environmental regeneration as compared to for-profit markets.

Civilization is at a precipice. After decades of overshoot, societies are entering a period of protracted breakdown and collapse. This moment is unlike prior cycles in civilizational history. For the first time, the planet is now primarily shaped by human activity, and humanity’s survival and flourishing are not assured. Civilization, if it survives, must intentionally limit its development to stay within safe social and ecological boundaries— something that is without historical precedent. This calls for a shift toward an Ecological Civilization—a society organized by principles of justice and regeneration. This dissertation explores this transition through multiple lenses—personal, social, and ecological—and argues that fundamentally re-structuring society on the basis of a relational paradigm offers the best pathways toward an Ecological Civilization. Theoretical and practical examples are explored in equal measure to provide a more coherent and comprehensive account of the depth and breadth of the transition under consideration. Cross-cutting discussions of spirituality, science, education, and political economy (among many other fields) offer insights into the multifaceted nature of today’s global poly-crisis, its challenges, and its opportunities. The dissertation concludes by outlining feasible pathways for realizing a just transition to an Ecological Civilization.

Amid yet another crisis in the boom and bust cycle of capitalism coupled with the rise of barbarism which was thought to be defeated in the battlefields, it can be said that there is no better time to reflect on the question of why it is that capitalism still maintains such a tight grip on the psyche of the human being. The economic and social problems of the present time, however, are not new. We find ourselves presented with the very same question which has been asked and extensively taken to task by other writers for centuries. This dissertation is therefore no more and no less than another endeavour ‘to relate the current impasse in philosophical thinking to the concrete dilemma of the human outlook for the future’. 

By staging a dialogue between two thinkers, Herbert Marcuse and Mark Fisher, whom, as far as I am aware, have not at the time of writing been put into dialogue by others, I revive a concept which the capitalist administered society has attempted to bury. This is the concept of the negative. As will be made evident in ‘Part I: Capitalist Realism’, the negative brings to the fore the contradictions and alienation which exists within the established order. In so doing, unconcealing the possibilities of liberation contained within the present state of affairs which were hitherto concealed in the process of covering over and absorbing the negative in one-dimensional society and thought. But where the negative regards future possibilities as that which ought to be, post-capitalist realism steps in to declare that this ought is not only a real possibility but more crucially, an absolute necessity. ‘Part II: Post-Capitalist Realism’ will demonstrate that it is by virtue of presupposing the actuality and absolute necessity of these possibilities that post-capitalism realism triumphs over the reign of capitalism realism. And in this triumph, a new found realism proclaims that today no longer is there a viable nor imaginable system except that of post-capitalism.

For Jean Baudrillard, the age of late capitalism is characterised by an endemic loss of meaning, as “serial repetition” produces a cultural state in which signifiers refer not to actual objects, but to previous signifiers, and thus become increasingly emptied of their original denotation. For Jerrold Hogle, Baudrillard’s simulacrum essentially characterises the majority of Gothic narratives.
This paper explores this relationship through an examination of two novels, Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger (2009) and Ali Smith’s The Accidental (2006), both of which involve spectral intrusions into bourgeois homes during periods of social and economic upheaval. It begins by meditating on representations of conservatism as intrinsically spectral in its attempt to perpetually relive the dead or dying ways of the past in the present. It then considers Fred Botting’s characterisation of the Gothic as an evocation of nightmare, contrasting the aptness of this reading to Waters’ morbid novel with The Accidental, which instead focuses, more optimistically, on awakenings. Finally, it contemplates the Derridean concept of the spectre as that which must be acknowledged to effect change within these novels, examining their characters’ comparative levels of willingness to do so in relation to the extent to which their lives are either corroded or transformed.
Ultimately, this paper argues that a recurrent question posed in Smith’s novel – “Imagine or afraid?” – encapsulates the essential choice with which humanity is repeatedly faced: as our old ways collapse around us, we can either cling to them at our peril, or dare to imagine an alternative future.

In contemporary discourse, cooperatives are often considered as vehicles for post-capitalist social transformation. However, theorists affiliated with the first, second, and third Internationals groupings of socialist parties suggested that cooperative potential was circumscribed by market coercion, leaving coops with limited pedagogical value and subordinating them to political movements. Their experience suggests it is important to avoid conflating cooperatives' demonstration of post-capitalist labor norms with the strategic problems of creating a post-capitalist society. Many left-wing advocates suggest that cooperatives are not only part of a post-capitalist future but a central tool to create it. The activists of the early socialist movement grappled with similar questions, and these insights can be grouped around three premises. First, the entire left cooperative tradition, from the founder of the movement Robert Owen to his critics Marx, Luxemburg, and Lenin, agreed that cooperatives remain bounded by a global market that coerced firms to cut costs and conform to the law of value. This made the prospects of a gradual socialist transformation of capitalism impossible. Second, coops demonstrated embryonic post-capitalist economic organization, but this pedagogic value could be overshadowed by the negative experiences of operating in a market economy. Third, cooperative support by Marx, Lenin, and the groupings of socialist parties known as Internationals came second to the question of how workers' movements could conquer state power. For the Bolsheviks, support for cooperatives inside Russia was a pragmatic measure designed to kickstart the Soviet economy. This report, commissioned by Grantmakers in the Arts, is about the ways that arts and culture grantmakers can engage in systems-change work that addresses root causes rather than symptoms of cultural inequity. The cultural sector is actively seeking alternatives to business-as-usual to create economic and racial justice in the sector and beyond. Grantmakers can play a role in the transformation of the sector by following the lead of BIPOC creatives who are innovating models for self-determination and community wealth. This work is part of an emergent movement in the United States that is known globally as the Solidarity Economy.

This article examines the role of Seoul, South Korea's capital, in the global imaginaries of the sharing economy. Experiments with sharing have been attempted all over the world, but Seoul was the first to proclaim itself a sharing city in September 2012, to much acclaim worldwide. Detailing Seoul's sharing agenda, the article shows that international enthusiasm about Seoul's sharing economy depends on exaggerating its scale and ignoring its complicity with the usual distribution of economic opportunities. My overarching argument, however, is that globally the sharing economy is significant as an imaginary of a post-capitalist future and that, by appearing to be what it was not, the Sharing City Seoul has played an important role in energizing those imaginaries. The article's data comes from public discourses about Seoul's sharing economy and participant observation at its two ritual sites, OuiShare Fest 2016 in Paris and Seoul Sharing Fest 2016.

2017 marks 45 years since the first English publication of Marx’s ‘Notes on machines’ in Economy & Society. This paper critiques how Marx’s ‘Fragment’ has subsequently been repurposed in postoperaist thought, and how this wields influence on contemporary left thinking via the work of Paul Mason. Changes in labour lead proponents to posit a ‘crisis of measurability’ and an incipient communism. I use the 'New reading of Marx', which picks up where debates in Economy and Society in the seventies left off, to dispute this. Based on an analysis of value as a social form undergirded in antagonistic social relations, I argue the Fragment’s reception runs contrary to Marx’s critique of political economy as a critical theory of society, with implications for left praxis today.

This conceptual article contributes to the post-growth strand of political ecology literature, which seeks to find sustainable ways of organizing the economy that do not require economic growth. It explores the idea that transitioning to post-growth societies requires a transition in the relationship-to-profit of business. I first conceptualize relationship-to-profit as the intersection of purpose, investment, and ownership of firms. Specifically, for-profit business structures entail a financial gain purpose, private ownership, and unlimited returns on investment; whereas not-for-profit business structures have a social benefit purpose, collective ownership, and limited returns on investment. I then outline ideal types of for-profit and not-for-profit economies, based on the differences between these two kinds of relationship-to-profit. The first ideal type shows how the for-profit business structure drives consumerism, economic growth, and ecological harm, as well as inequality and political capture, preventing post-growth transitions. These dynamics might be slowed down by businesses that seek to balance private financial gain with social benefit (known as dual-purpose businesses). The second ideal type describes the dynamics that might be expected in an economy consisting of not-for-profit businesses, which have a legal mandate to pursue only social benefit. This analysis explains how transitioning from for-profit to not-for-profit forms of business might change some of the most problematic dynamics of the economy, allowing for post-growth transformations. A brief discussion of the possible shortcomings of a not-for-profit economy is also offered. Résumé Cet article conceptuel contribue au volet post-croissance de la littérature en écologie politique, qui cherche à trouver des moyens durables d'organiser l'économie qui ne nécessitent pas de croissance économique. Il explore l'idée que la transition vers des sociétés post-croissance nécessite une transition dans la relation au profit des entreprises. J'ai d'abord conceptualisé la relation au profit comme l'intersection du «sens du but», de l'investissement et de la propriété des entreprises. Plus précisément, les structures commerciales à but lucratif impliquent un objectif de gain financier, la propriété privée et un retour sur investissement illimité; tandis que les structures commerciales à but non lucratif ont un objectif d'avantages sociaux, de propriété collective et de retours sur investissement limités. J'expose ensuite les types idéaux d'économies à but lucratif et sans but lucratif, en fonction des différences entre ces deux types de relation au profit. Le premier type idéal montre comment la structure commerciale à but lucratif stimule le consumérisme, la croissance économique et les dommages à l'environnement. En outre, il crée des inégalités et la capture par les intérêts politiques, empêchant les transitions post-croissance. This paper examines the economic practices of maker spaces-open workshops that have increased in number over recent years and that aim to provide access to tools, materials and skills for small-scale manufacturing and repair. Scholarly interest in such spaces has been increasing across the social sciences more broadly, parallel to a growing interest in craft and making in economic geography. However, to rectify the 'capitalocentrism' of much existing work, the paper examines the case of a workshop in Edinburgh, Scotland, through the dual theoretical lens of diverse economies and social practice theory. This conceptual approach sees the space as a novel form of economic 'being-in-common', providing diverse and contradictory opportunities for post-capitalist practice. The paper draws conclusions regarding the limits and potential of such spaces for sowing the prefigurative seeds for a more inclusive, sustainable and democratic urbanism.

It’s impossible to discuss the recent Blade Runner 2049 without touching on its dystopian
aesthetics. The film is a contradiction of fascinating aesthetics within a world of decay,
the gloomy vision of cyberpunk. Yet, one must not limit the discussion of dystopian
cinema to its visual images or its narrative aspects. What is most important is the
way in which dystopian cinema relates to ideas. This article critically engages with
Blade Runner 2049 from a theoretical point of view, focusing on its key themes,
which have diagnostic value for social and cultural analysis. I argue that the film
presents a critique of the current world, a nascent rebellion, which opposes corporate
capitalism, but it’s unable to conceive of a future that moves beyond it.

In the age of post-capitalism, what is the value of design? Is value defined by economic potential? Or is it something far less tangible? Now more than ever design has the ability to engage us in economic, political and cultural debate, to actively resist the monotony of daily life, and to counteract the precarious situation on which modern society seems to rest. Positioning itself as a lens through which to view the world, design allows us, and in some cases, even forces us to reflect on the many aspects of the societies in which we live.
Divided into three chapters, GOING REAL positions itself in relation to the works of Marc Jongen, Maurizio Lazzarato, Adam Greenfield and Tiziana Terranova, among others. However, unlike the abovementioned authors, this book draws on the works of selected designers and artists to reflect on the economic, political and cultural aspects of our post-capitalist societies. Beginning with an in-depth case study of Detroit during the downfall of the industrial era, this volume moves on to a timely and provocative insight into the human crises surrounding current migration trends with a particular focus on Calais. Finally, in the third chapter, the human body itself is laid bare as the authors analyse how and why the most personal of ‘spaces’ became not only the ultimate marketplace for businesses but also an object of control for governments.

The persistence of struggles by popular sectors in the context of the pink tide has generated ongoing debates about how to interpret the region’s left turn. For some, these movements are understood as forming part of a tense but ultimately productive relationship with left governments in the pursuit of post-neoliberal development. For others, it points to potentially irreconcilable political differences, and neoliberal continuities in pink tide governance. In this paper, I address these debates by presenting research on two social movements: Argentina’s recuperated enterprises and Venezuela’s popular economy. Using a Marxian-inspired, situated case study approach, I argue that these movements can be understood as ‘post-capitalist struggles’, that is, attempts to articulate new forms of democracy and cooperation that point beyond capitalism. As such, these movements push beyond the politics of Kirchnerismo and Chavismo that reproduce, albeit in new forms, the limitations to post-capitalist development associated with Peronism and the ‘magical state’. These movements therefore reveal both the region’s potential post-capitalist future, and the barriers that stand against it in the context of the region’s latest phase of development.

The Facette project was a direct answer to the results
of my thesis „Post-capitalist Design Aesthetics,
Speculative Design & Accelerationism“

After working out similar approaches to speculative
materialism & realism in accelerationist political
theory and Dunne & Rabys speculative design, I
proposed SD as a way towards an accelerated future
that is actually designed for humans. Similarly we can
see accelerationist theories as a speculative design
project on a grand scale.

To move towards a design discipline that can take this
role of a socially and politically disrupting force, we
need to look at the traditional design Industrie as just a
part of what we as designers can actually achieve.
Currently there are just a privileged few that can
participate in the debate wich is why moving design
education into a more diverse direction is a necessity.
Universities offer us a platform where we can design
without the pressure of an industry that needs to sell
products. We can open up this system, by fusing
research, practice, education and a link to the public.
