Tikanga Hakari was a fabulous way to end the term. A cultural celebration that took us around the world, immersed in Salford student talent. Thank you so much for the sell out attendances and for the accolades the students and staff so richly deserved. The quality, quantity and diversity of the Art displayed in the classrooms was another highlight of the learning experiences teachers had planned, delivered and displayed for you. Clearly the students have been exposed to many learning experiences through the Arts and Social Sciences. Many thanks to all of the parents that shared your home traditions and cultural practices with us over the term; we valued your input and enthusiasm. Last week I was privileged to attend the APPANZPF joint conference for Principals in Melbourne. 1500 Principals attended the conference hearing a wide variety of speakers, one of the most interesting for me was Dr Pasi Sahlberg, who spoke about the success of Finland as the top performing education system in the world. They have focussed on enhancing equity for all students. Finland is performing in other areas as well: like child health & wellbeing, technological advancements, global equity, child poverty rate, global innovation, prosperity, and happiness index. He talked to 5 main principles which have worked to underpin their policy:
MORE COLLABORATION LESS COMPETITION MORE TRUST LESS TEST BASED ACCOUNTABILITY MORE PROFESSIONALISM- LESS BUREAUCRACY MORE EQUITY LESS MARKETIZATION BETTER GENDER EQUALITY
Heat-Ups Every Thursday Sausage Sizzle Every Friday $1.50 each 28 SeptEnd of Term 3 15 OctTerm 1 Begins 22 OctLabour Day 25 OctSchool Disco 29 OctBOT meeting
The Finland education Policy stays the same even if an election changes the political party so that the journey continues and is not constantly changing direction. He said that children must learn to play in order to learn and understand what their mind can do. Less is more in FinlandThey have less classroom time than most other countries in the world between age 714 years. Less homework is more play homework which is done at school. The key to success in any field is a matter of practicing a specific task for a total of around 10000 hours How long do they need to play in order to practice the 10 000 hour rule? With this in mind I hope that all of our families manage to PLAY and take some down time over the term break. .
