A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 3rd grade students to learn about economics; more specifically, the difference between needs and wants by comparing magazine advertisements. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3rd Skill Level: Students at all learning levels Grouping: Whole group for discussion, small group for activity, independent assessment
C. Materials: At least 25 magazines Tape/Stapler Scissors A blank bulletin board or large piece of construction paper with a T-chart drawn on it. Needs on one side, Wants on the other. Students social studies notebook D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E9.3.1 Identify needs as high priority wants, and wants as goods, services, or leisure activities.
E. Procedure: 1. Write the following question on the board: What is the difference between a want and a need? Follow it up with a class discussion, and write the class definition of need and want on the bulletin board above the T-Chart. 2. As a class, create a list of needs (Food, Water, Shelter, Clothes, etc.) and add it to the bulletin board on the needs side. 3. Next, give a few examples of Wants. What about ice cream? Ice cream is a type of food, but is it a need or a want? Why? (This would be a want. Is it a food? Yes, but is it necessary for one to survive? No. Its something that one can live without). What about the newest style of Nike shoes? Shoes are necessary, but is it really necessary to have the most expensive pair of shoes? No. (In this example, people pay for the brand name, not necessarily the shoe. 4. Explain to students that they will be getting into their table groups and they will each have a magazine to look through. Their mission is to find 8-10 pictures of needs and

wants. (They should have 4-5 pictures each for needs and wants). Each student must find at least one picture on their own. 5. Once students have finished finding their needs and wants, have each group: o o o Share their pictures with the class Tape/staple the picture to the Wants or Needs side on the bulletin Justify why they chose to add their picture to the needs or wants
6. CLOSURE: Have the class discuss if they think they have more needed or Wanted items in their own house. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will have students pull out their Social Studies notebooks and label the next section Needs vs. Wants. Students can choose one of the following prompts: Write down 2 needs and 2 wants that YOU have. Remember to justify your reasoning with 3-4 sentences OR Find 2 more pictures of wants and 2 more pictures of needs from your magazine and justify with 3-4 sentences why you categorized them in that way. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know students understand the concepts from the lesson if they can correctly differentiate between wants and needs and justify their answers accordingly. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of this lesson will be our class discussion. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think it may be difficult for some students to differentiate between true needs and wants. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? This lesson can be followed up by having students create two separate Birthday wish lists. One wish list can be base purely on needs. The other wish list can be based on wants. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who do not grasp this concept, I will meet with them and discuss the topic in more detail. I will try to get the lesson to appeal the students learning style.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I would maybe change the closure? Then again, its short and sweet, and gets the students to look at needs and wants, and apply them one more time to their own life. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson plan was finding different approaches throughout to reach the different learning styles.
Materials/Resources:
I got the idea of using magazines for items that represent "needs" and "wants." From the following web site: Economics Activities for 3rd Grade | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/list_6401839_economicsactivities-3rd-grade.html#ixzz2PpZZXrXS
