COURSE OBJECTIVE

Objective of this course is to


Understand the concept of design for manufacturing, assembly and environment.
Impart knowledge on the factors influencing sustainability
Emphasis on the role of computer application in design for manufacturing and assembly.

selection, evaluation method, Process capability - Feature tolerances Geometric tolerances
- Assembly limits - Datum features - Tolerance stacks.

Working principle, material, manufacture, design - Possible solutions - materials choice —
Influence of materials on form design - form design of welded members, forgings and casting.

Unit 3 COMPONENT DESIGN AND MACHINING CONSIDERATION 9


Design features to facilitate machining - drills - milling cutters - keyways - Doweling procedures,
countersunk screws - reduction of machined area - simplification by separation -simplification by
amalgamation - design for machinability - design for economy - design for clamping — design for
accessibility - design for assembly — product design for manual assembly -product design for
automatic assembly — robotic assembly.
