As old as 1660 to 1440 B.C.
Native of South Asia – India-Burma
Then traveled to Middle East, East Africa, Australia
Introduced in USA during late 19th Century.
Important pulse crop.
Seed cooked, roasted, milled, split used as “Dal”.
High protein 22-24 %, easily digestible.
Leaves & stalk used as fodder.
Green plants used as green manure for soil
improvement.

Soil & Climate
Crop of tropics & subtropics.
Survive in wide range of temperatures.
Requires warm climate.
Unproductive when temperature lowers than 10 oC.
Optimum temperature ranges 20 - 30 oC.
Grown on wide range of soils i.e. Sandy loam to
heavy clay.
Best suited are sandy loam soils.
Tolerate drought but sensitive to water logging &
salinity.
