The document describes procedures for preparing two inorganic compounds. The first is ferrous ammonium sulfate, prepared by dissolving ferrous sulfate and ammonium sulfate in a dilute acid solution. Crystals of the compound separate upon cooling. The second compound prepared is potassium trioxalatoferrate(III), formed by adding ferric hydroxide precipitate to a solution of oxalic acid and potassium oxalate. Crystals of this complex compound separate after concentrating and cooling the solution. Both procedures involve dissolving reactants, concentrating the solutions, cooling to form crystals, filtering and drying the products.

Preparation of Inorganic Compound – 1
( Double salt – Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate )
AIM: To prepare a pure sample of Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate. THEORY: Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate (Mohr's salt) is prepared by dissolving equimolar mixture of hydrated Ferrous sulphate and Ammonium Sulphate in water containing 2 to 3 ml of dilute sulphuric acid. Then a reaction mixture is subjected to crystallization and light green crystals of Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate separate out. FeSO4.7H2O + (NH4)2SO4 ------- FeSO4.(NH4)SO4.6H2O + H2O APPARATUS REQUIRED: Beakers, China dish, Funnel, Glass rod, Wash bottle, Tripod stand, Wire gauze CHEMICALS REQUIRED: Ferrous sulphate- 7 g Ammonium Sulphate - 3.5 g Sulphuric acid -3ml Ethanol PROCEDURE: ☆ Take 7 g of Ferrous sulphate and 3.5 g of Ammonium Sulphate crystals in a beaker. ☆ Add about 2 to 3 ml of dilute sulphuric acid to prevent the hydrolysis of ferrous sulphate. ☆ Add 20 ml of boiling hot water to the contents in the beaker in small instalments to dissolve the salts completely. ☆ Filter the solution to remove undissolved impurities and transfer the filtrate to a China dish. ☆ Heat the China dish to concentrate it to the crystallization point. ☆ Cool the China dish over a beaker with cold water. ☆ On cooling light green Crystals of Mohr’s salt separate out. ☆ Decant off the mother liquor and wash the crystals with small amount of Ethanol to remove sulphuric acid sticking to the crystals. ☆ Dry the Crystal by placing them between filter paper and weigh it. RESULT: Weight of Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate obtained = g PRECAUTIONS: ☆ Cool the solution slowly to get good crystals. ☆ Do not disturb the solution while cooling. ☆ Do not heat the solution for a long time as it may oxidises Ferrous ions to ferric ions.

[Potassium trioxalatoferrate(III)] Aim : To prepare a pure sample of the complex Potassium trioxalatoferrate(III). Theory: The complex potassium trioxalatoferrate(III) can be prepared by dissolving freshly prepared ferric Hydroxide in a solution of potassium oxalate and Oxalic acid.
Materials required: Beakers, China dish, funnel, glass rod,
wash bottle, tripod stand and wire-gauze. Chemicals required: Ferric chloride, Oxalic acid, Potassium oxalate and Potassium hydroxide Procedure: • Dissolve 3.5 g of anhydrous ferric chloride in 50 ml of distilled water in a beaker. • In another beaker, dissolve 4 g of Potassium Hydroxide in 50 ml of water. • Add potassium hydroxide solution to ferric chloride solution in small portion with constant stirring. • Filter the precipitate of ferric hydroxide and wash the precipitate with distilled water. • In another beaker, 4 g of Oxalic acid and 5.5 g of Potassium oxalate in 100ml of water and stir well to get a clear solution. • Add freshly prepared ferric Hydroxide precipitate in small amounts to the above solution with constant stirring. • If the precipitate does not dissolve then warm it and leave the contents for sometime. • Filter and transfer the filtrate to China dish and heat it to the crystallization point. • Now place the China dish on a beaker containing cold water and keep it aside for crystallization. • China dish should be covered with a black paper as the complex is sensitive to light. • Decant of the mother liquor, wash the crystals with ethanol and dry them between the folds of filter paper and weigh it. Result: Weight of the crystals obtained = g Precautions: ☆ Do not concentrate the solution too much. ☆ Let the concentrated solution cool slowly and undisturbed to get large amount of crystals.
