important? Why? people to recognize stars in the
sky. They represent stories from
many different cultures and are
also important because they
serve as a celestial map.
Astronomers refer to
zodiac constellations when
describing the location of the
planets in our solar
system. Constellations are also
useful for navigation. Just think
of the North Star!

E. ELABORATION
 Background Knowledge for
Teachers
 The International
Astronomical Union lists 88
constellations — a list that
has been in use since 1922
and encompasses all the
night sky around the world.
 It was Ptolemy in the 2nd
century who identified and
listed 48 constellations. This
was the first written and
scientific account of the
constellations, and although
his notes only covered the
sky that he could see, it was
used for centuries as the
benchmark for astronomy. It
should be noted that many
of the constellations listed
also have Babylonian,
Egyptian, Roman
mythologies, and more.
What’s interesting is that
while the specific characters
in the stories may change,
the rough outlines and
shapes of the constellations
remained fairly similar

 Let’s have a game. “Name

that Constellation”

 As I flash a picture of a
constellation on the screen,
you are going to identify and
write your answer on the
metacard. The 1st to give
the correct answer will gets
1 point.

Aquarius Aquila

Aries Canis Major

Cassiopeia Cygnus

2. EVALUATION Directions: Name and describe the

constellation in the picture.
