b. Use verbs as gerunds in sentences and phrases,
c. Value the importance of knowing the functions of gerunds.

Gerund and its use. But before we go on with that


topic, we will have a short game called “Charades” Yes, Teacher.
Are you familiar with this game?

That’s good, now we will divide you into 3 groups


and pick 1 player from each group who will act in
front. The other members try to guess the word from
the action of the player. Each group will have 2
minutes to perform the act. The group who guesses (The students will start to play the
more will win the game and will receive a prize. game)

What a great teamwork! Congratulations to the


winners of our short game. The words from our
game are related to our topic for today.

Now, what can you infer from the given words?


Teacher, the given words are example of
verb.
Correct, the given words are examples of verbs
because they describe an action. However, it only
differs if those words function as a noun.

Here’s an example:

Playing mobile games is my favorite hobby vs. I love


playing mobile games.

What can you notice about these 2 sentences?


Teacher, in the first sentence the verb
playing functions as a noun and the
second sentence the verb playing
Excellent! All the verbs functioning as nouns are functions as a verb.

Now, what is Gerund? Kindly read the meaning of Teacher, A Gerund is usually defined as

from a verb and that functions as a noun

complement, an object of the
preposition, a direct object, and an
appositive.

A gerund is a noun formed from a verb. All gerunds


end -ing.

Example: Swimming, running, drinking

Will you use it in a sentence? Swimming is my favorite hobby.

Gerunds also appear in gerund phrases, which


combine the gerund with other words that add
additional information. For example, the phrase
“sprinting across the field” is a gerund phrase.
Both gerunds and gerund phrases work the same way
and have four variations in regard to how
they function within a sentence: subject of the
sentence, direct object of the sentence, subject
complement, and object of a preposition.

The different Uses of Gerund

1. Gerund as a Subject
- The topic of a sentence.
Example: Acting is fun.
Hunting tigers is dangerous
Smoking causes lung cancer

Will you identify the gerunds used in the given


examples? Teacher, the gerunds are acting, hunting
and smoking.

2. Gerund as a Subjective Complement


- A subject complement is a word or phrase
that follows a linking verb and describes or
identifies the subject.

What are the linking verbs?
Linking verbs- are, is, was, were Teacher the linking verbs- are, is, was,
were
Example: Generosity is giving more than you can
What I like is traveling to other countries.
Seeing is believing.

3. Gerund as Object of a Preposition


- An object of a preposition follows the
preposition itself (about, at, by, for, in, of…)

Example: You can achieve your goals by


working hard.
You can achieve your goals by work hard

In the given example which sentence is Teacher, the correct sentence is “You
correct? can achieve your goals by working
hard.”
Correct!

4. Gerund as Direct object


- Receives the action of the verb.

Example: I love pretending that I’m okay.

*In the first sentence, the gerund “pretending”


tells us what I love. “Pretending” receives the
action of “love”. What do I love

My dog likes napping.


In the third sentence, the gerund “napping” tells
us what the dog likes. “Napping” receives the
action of “likes.” What does the dog like?
Teacher, the dog likes napping.
5. Appositive
- Is a noun or noun phrase that renames
another noun.
Example: Low-impact sports, like riding a bike,
cause less stress on your knees.
Stress reliever, such as singing, is good for the
heart.

An appositive is a noun phrase that comes after


another noun phrase (its antecedent) to provide
extra information about it.
