W02 Journal: Physical Hazards

[Ezeani Kosarachukwu Valentine]

Hazard 1: [Noise]

Critical Traits and Characteristics (Liquid, It’s primarily characterized by its auditory perception
Gas, Solid, Flammable, Reactive, Corrosive, etc.): and intensity/frequency.

Why is it dangerous? Noise is dangerous primarily due to its adverse effects

on human health and the environment. Prolonged
exposure to high-intensity noise can lead to hearing
loss, sleep disturbances, stress, and other health issues.

Recommended controls: Controlling noise pollution is recommended through

measures such as soundproofing, zoning regulations,
and technological solutions to protect human health and
preserve environmental quality.

Why might this be a concern in your area? In my area, noise pollution might be a concern due to
urbanization, increased traffic, industrial activities, and
construction projects, all of which contribute to
elevated noise levels affecting residents’ quality of life
and environmental well-being.

Hazard 2: [Radiation- Radon]

Critical Traits and Characteristics (Liquid, The critical trait for radon radiation is its physical state,
Gas, Solid, Flammable, Reactive, Corrosive, etc.): which is a gas.

Why is it dangerous? Radon is dangerous because it emits ionizing radiation

that can damage lung tissue when inhaled, increasing
the risk of lung cancer, particularly in indoor
environments where it can accumulate to high levels.

Recommended controls: Recommended control measures for radon include

testing indoor air for radon levels, ventilating buildings
to reduce radon accumulation, and implementing radon-
resistant construction techniques to prevent its entry
into buildings.

Why might this be a concern in your area? Radon might be a concern in my area if there are
geological conditions that promote its release from the
ground, such as the presence of uranium-rich bedrock
or soil, which can lead to elevated radon levels in
buildings and pose health risks to residents.

Hazard 3: [Radiation- UV Rays]

Critical Traits and Characteristics (Liquid, The critical trait for ultraviolet (UV) radiation is its
Gas, Solid, Flammable, Reactive, Corrosive, etc.): position on the electromagnetic spectrum and its
capacity to cause harm to living tissues, rather than its
physical state or other chemical properties.

Why is it dangerous? UV radiation is dangerous because it can penetrate the

skin, causing sunburn, premature aging, and an
increased risk of skin cancer, particularly with
prolonged or intense exposure.

Recommended controls: To protect yourself from UV radiation, wear clothes

that cover your skin, use sunscreen with a high SPF,
stay in the shade when the sun is strongest, and wear
sunglasses that block UV rays.

Why might this be a concern in your area? UV radiation might be a concern in my area if there are
factors such as high altitude, proximity to the equator,
or frequent sunny weather, which can lead to increased
UV exposure and higher risks of sunburn and skin
damage for residents.

Hazard 4: [Heat]

Critical Traits and Characteristics (Liquid, The critical trait for heat is not related to its physical
Gas, Solid, Flammable, Reactive, Corrosive, etc.): state (liquid, gas, solid), flammability, reactivity, or
corrosiveness. Instead, it is defined by its capacity to
transfer energy from one object to another due to a
temperature difference

Why is it dangerous? Heat can be dangerous because excessive exposure to

high temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses such
as heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration, which
can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Recommended controls: Recommended control measures for managing heat-

related risks include staying hydrated, avoiding
prolonged exposure to high temperatures, seeking shade
or air-conditioned spaces during hot weather, wearing
lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and taking
regular breaks in cooler environments.
Why might this be a concern in your area? Heat-related concerns might arise in my area due to
factors such as high temperatures during summer
months, humidity levels, lack of adequate shade or
cooling facilities, and urban heat island effects, all of
which can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses and
discomfort for residents.

Hazard 5: [Cold]

Critical Traits and Characteristics (Liquid, Solid

Gas, Solid, Flammable, Reactive, Corrosive, etc.):

Why is it dangerous? Cold can be dangerous due to the risk of hypothermia,

frostbite, exacerbation of medical conditions, increased
risk of accidents, and damage to infrastructure

Recommended controls: To control the dangers of cold, dress warmly, stay

indoors during extreme conditions, ensure proper
heating, monitor weather forecasts, have emergency
supplies, and check on vulnerable individuals.

Why might this be a concern in your area? Cold weather can be a concern in my area due to the
risk of hypothermia, frostbite, icy conditions leading to
accidents, and potential disruptions to infrastructure and
essential services
