Part 1. Interview

Task A. Greetings & Introduction

Hi, my name is _______, and I’m your interviewer. How are you today?

For the record, can you please tell me your complete name and home address?

Task B. Providing Job-Related Information

Diet is a very important part of everyone's life and directly related to health. Do you think what
you choose to eat in the morning affects how well you can do your job? Why or why not?

Part 2. Role-Play

Note: The interviewer narrates the situation and plays the role of the pilot. The test taker is the
controller and responds to the situation and/or message.

Task A. Situation 1

Imagine you are working as an area controller. Huntsville airport has just declared that they
are closing down their runways due to deteriorating weather conditions. Arriving aircraft need
to proceed to their alternate airport instead. The pilot of Hotel India four niner zero two will be
calling you soon. Listen to the pilot's message, then respond as necessary.

Task B Situation 2 (Picture)

Look at the picture provided. You have 15 seconds to study the picture.

Your radar shows that Sierra India one four zero five is in conflict with a fast moving,
northbound, unidentified aircraft which is about five miles to his right. Warn the pilot about the
aircraft as you respond to his message.

Task C. Situation 3

Echo Victor five four three seven is en route to Guam. Due to separation, you want the aircraft
to reduce his speed to three zero zero knots. Give the pilot the instructions, then listen to the
pilot’s message and respond as necessary.
Part 3. Providing Information and Sharing Opinions

Task A. Work-Related Situation

Radar controllers work in one large room. Do you find it distracting to hear other controllers
communicating with aircraft not in your sector/area of control? Why or why not?

Task B. Presenting an Idea about a Picture

Look at the simplified radar screen provided. You have 15 seconds to study.

Describe the situation in as much detail as possible. What is occurring?


How would you handle this situation?

Task C. Stating an Opinion


In your opinion, what is the most common cause of miscommunications over the radio? What
measures can be taken to reduce or eliminate these types of miscommunications?
