Step-by-Step Instruction
Open your Adobe Illustrator, then select CUSTOM and set PIXEL resolution to 1000 X 1000
When your canvas is ready, select LINE TOOL on your TOOL BAR, then make sure to set the FILL COLOR to
NONE and choose any color for your STROKE FILL. If you can’t find your LINE TOOL, just right-click on the
SHAPE TOOL, then choose LINE TOOL.
Go to LINE TOOL on your TOOL BAR and create a straight vertical line. Make sure to hold SHIFT KEY while
drawing your line.
Now, using the SELECTION TOOL, duplicate the line by holding ALT KEY and dragging out the line towards
the right of the canvas.
Now, select both the lines, hold the ALT KEY again to duplicate the lines, then drag out to one side. This
time, the spacing between the 2 sets of lines should be narrower than the first.
Now, select the newly duplicated set of lines then go to EDIT and COPY. You can also use the command
CTRL + C for this action.
Now, to duplicate the same spacing, use command CTRL + D, repeat 2 more times so you have 4 pairs of
lines in total.
Select all your lines using SELECTION TOOL, then right-click on the selected objects, then select GROUP.
Right-click again on the selected objects the go to TRANSFORM and REFLECT.
On the REFLECT PROPERTY WINDOW, select ANGLE and set to 45 degrees, then click on COPY to create a
version of the lines in horizontal orientation. You can also do this by copying the lines, pasting in place
and rotating while holding SHIFT KEY until the lines are leaning horizontally.
You will have this grid.
Now, go to your SHAPES TOOL, right-click, and select ELIPSE TOOL. Make sure that your FILL COLOR is set
to NONE. You may choose any color for your STROKE COLOR.
Create a perfect circle inside the grid lines. You can do this by starting your circle from the upper left
corner of the grid down to the lower right. Make sure to hold SHIFT while drawing your circle.
Now, select your circle, then copy. Go to EDIT on MENU BAR and select COPY or simply use command
CTRL + C.
Go back to EDIT again and select PASTE in PLACE or simply use command CTRL + SHIFT + V.
Resize your circle until it reached the next set of inner lines. Hold SHIFT KEY and ALT KEY while resizing so
your object transform from or towards the center.
Select the smaller circle, the copy.
Now, select the outer most circle using the SELECTION TOOL, copy and paste in place. Then resize the left
side, holing SHIFT KEY, towards the next line. Refer to the picture above.
Next, select the inner most circle, copy.
Paste in Place.
Resize the right side of the circle, holding SHIFT KEY until it reached the right grid next to it’s original
place. Refer to the example above.
For easier skeletal view, use command CTRL + Y. Use the same command to go back to default view.
Create a perfect circle, drawing your shape from the upper left corner down to the 4th set of lines. Refer
to the example above.
Then, select the circle, and COPY.
Resize, grab the right side of the circle, hold SHIFT KEY, drag out to towards the right side. Refer to the
example above. Make sure that whenever you resize the shapes, it snaps perfectly on the lines and
edges.
Select the new set of circles by using SELECTION TOOL, hold SHIFT and click all the included shapes.
Right-click on the selected objects then select GROUP.
Now, duplicate the groups of circle and place on the opposite sides of the grid.
You can go back to default view by using command CTRL + Y
Using the SELECTION TOOL, select all the objects or simply use command CTRL + A.
On the color icons, remove both FILL COLOR and STROKE COLOR.
Now select the SHAPE BUILDER TOOL on your TOOL BAR, set your preferred color on the FILL COLOR and
trace out the shape on your grid.
Always remember to Zoom in and out every now and then to make sure you are tracing out all included
parts of the shapes. The above image is the 1st shape for this icon.
Now, I changed the color of the FILL COLOR so I can easily identify the separate shapes in my logo.
Now, using SELECTION TOOL, select on of the shapes and go back to TOOL BAR to select the GRADIENT
TOOL.
Resizing and
Rotating
Point
You can move the gradient by grabbing it on the line, you can also rotate the gradient so you can control
where and which of the color goes to which part of the shape.
Now go back to SELECTION TOOL, select the remaining shapes, use command “I” to select the EYE
DROPEER TOOL and click on the shape with the gradient color.
It will automatically copy the properties of the 1st shape.
You can further edit the gradient direction by going back to GRADIENT TOOL, rotating, moving, and
resizing the gradient line.
Always consider putting the darkest shade next to lightest shade to create a more dramatic contrast. It
will also help define your logo shape.
To edit the gradient color, go to the GRADIENT WINDOW. If your can’t find your gradient window, go to
WINDOW on MENU BAR, then select GRADIENT.
Double click on each gradient color point and select your preferred colors.
Again, make sure you replace the darkest shade with the darkest color you prefer to redefine your
contrast.
