Gene Hernandez Past District Governor Past Chino Rotary President National Immunization Day 2012

Gene has traveled the world for Rotary. Not just for NID in India. India, a country; a sub-continent of Asia which does not automatically conjure the Taj Mahal, but rather filth, poverty, open sewers; stunning population growth; worshipped cows while people starve and of course the diseases that follow. Polio follows the unsanitary conditions as night follows day. Gene was asked why he bothered to administer vaccine to a population wherein little has changed in centuries and only now have, barely and only mathematically, escaped being an endemic country. Why do you bother Gene? His answer was in the parable of the starfish thrower story: Many starfish washed on shore. A boy walks the beach throwing them back before the sun comes up fully and they die as the tide recedes. There are so many, asked a man, so why do you bother? The boy responded while throwing another into the ocean,

Tidbits from Rotarys Past Submitted by Rotarian Al McCombs McGroarty has been here before ...but not our Lee! This one was John Steven McGroarty, Californias poet laureate and writer of the Mission Play and other notable works, who spoke to Chino Rotary on January 15, 1941. Here for the 10th anniversary of the Methodist Church dedication in the evening, Mr. McGroarty took Rotarians and a large number of visitors back to the days of the Spanish Mexican dons, and compared their life with that of the present day. Give us back the los happiness, the song on our lips and the gladness in our hearts that characterized the Californians of old, the poet concluded. Attorney General speaker, August 21, 1949 Fred Howser, Californias colorful attorney general, was the main speaker Tuesday noon at the Rotary Club. Howser concentrated on the land rulings. He also touched on Central Valley Water Project. Members didnt let him get away, however, without a few remarks about Mickey Cohen! Rotary Outing to Mountains and Ballgame On Saturday, August 2, 1986, Chino Rotarians and their families went to an evening community barbecue sponsored by the Crestline Rotary at Lake Gregory, which included entertainment and bingo at the San Moritz lodge. It was preceded by a social time at the cabin of Al and Gretchen McCombs. On Thursday, September 11, the club went to a Dodger-Astro game.
