Teaching Strategies Despite a growing body of research on
teaching methods, instructors lack a
comprehensive resource that highlights
Filling the Gap and synthesizes proven approaches.

Each chapter in this book:

● Describes an approach & lists essential
features and elements
● Reviews findings from the research literature
● Describes techniques to improve
effectiveness

“Studies demonstrating that lectures are not effective have relied typically on traditional, full class lectures.
Recent research suggests that there are ways to make lectures more active and thus improve learning,”

• Guided Note -Taking

• Lecture Bingo
Peer Teaching

“There is abundant research suggesting that students believe that reciprocal peer
teaching improves learning and some evidence that it actually does improve learning.”

them effective for their learning.”

work writing activities, teacher-assigned writing structure, writing that connects
content to student’s life experiences, and giving and receiving feedback on their
writing.”
➔ Graffiti Boards
➔ Yesterday’s News
Reflection

“Metacognitive reflection activities provide a vehicle for students to think about

thinking. To make connections with prior experiences, clarify learning, make plans for
learning, document the learning process, use active recall and identify successes,
